Week three of the DP World Tour’s Iberian Swing came to an end in dramatic fashion on the final day on the island of Mallorca, host this week the Son Muntaner Golf Club in Palma.
Starting the day in top spots were Germany’s Yannik Paul and Kiwi Ryan Fox, both beginning the day at 16 under par.
A double bogey on the first hole for Fox ultimately set the tone for the man then third in the DP World Tour Rankings, further bogeys on three, six and nine, putting him out in 39 ending his chances for a third win of the season, as he finished the day three over par 74, tied 4th.
A similar trend starting for Yannik Paul, out in one over 36 dropping him back into the mix with the chasing pack.
England’s Marcus Armitage started the day two off the lead, and he made his task to win a lot harder early on. Three bogeys over his first six holes moved him down the leaderboard. Birdie on eight seemed to click him into gear as a further three birdies to open his back nine, put him tied with Yannik Paul.
Meanwhile six groups ahead, Paul Waring whose maiden win came at the 2018 Nordea Masters, set the clubhouse lead at 14 under par, after a five under par 66, the bar set.
The biggest swing of the day then came on the 15th hole, a bogey for Paul after a misjudged second shot, left the door open for Armitage who then holed a clutch eight footer for birdie moving him to -16, two clear with three to play.
There was more drama to come with Germany’s Nicolai Von Dellingshausen who birded his final hole to tie Waring in the clubhouse at 14 under. They both then had to wait and see if a playoff was needed.
Armitage’s lead didn’t last long as a missed four footer for par on 16 and a tee shot out of bounds on 17 resulted in a double bogey seven dropping him back to 13 under par with one hole to play.
Yannik Paul had managed to keep himself amongst the top of the leaderboard, and he left his best work till the last. Needing birdie to secure victory, from just off the fringe he roled in his 10 footer to become the 2022 Mallorca Golf Open champion. A one shot victory that moves him up to 20th on the DP World Tour Rankings.
“It was really hard today, my ball striking was unbelievable all week, hit it really close the first couple of holes and couldn’t make any putts, so that was really hard to stay in the moment.
“I was just trying to breath, on hole 11 we had to wait a long time and I actually got pretty nervous and I just tried to stay in the moment. Unfortunately Marcus hit a couple of bad shots and I couldn’t of dreamed of a better ending and I’m over the moon.
“To finish like this is a dream come true, couldn’t ask for anything better right now.”
Dubai based professionals Cabrera Bello & last week’s winner Otaegui finished 37th and 47th respectively.
Next week the DP World Tour heads to the Dom Pedro Victoria Golf Course in Vilamoura, Portugal for the Portugal Masters.
