They have been friends for a long time. Ever since school. And when they both came to the cinema, the friendship only strengthened. This is the friendship story of Nivin Pauly and Aju Varghese. But it is also true that at one point there was a small rift between them. It was when Nivin Pauly was late for the shoot of ‘Love Action Drama’, a film co-produced by Aju Varghese. Aju didn’t bother to hide his displeasure. But Aju is quick to add that all it took was a phone call for the rift to disappear. And he really doesn’t think it can really be called a fight. With ‘Saturday Night’ directed by Rosshan Andrews currently packed, Nivin Pauly and Aju Varghese share the story of their friendship with Manorama.
So who took the initiative to bury the hatchet?
Aju: Who else but Nivin will do this? He is more mature than me. Then he acted in ‘Kayamkulam Kochunni’. And Nivin didn’t have the look or the body required for a colorful film like ‘Love Action Drama’. I think Nivin was right at this point. It was beyond his control to find a solution to my problem. What’s friendship without fights? Sometimes there will be such cases where your friends will be hurt by your actions.
Nivin: Such small quarrels are common between friends. The beauty is in understanding it with each other and finding a solution to it. That’s the power of friendship.
You’re back with another ‘Saturday Night’ friendship movie…
Nivin: We both started our careers with a film about friendship (Malarvadi Arts Club). It took us 12 years to come together in a film about friendship. “Saturday Night” isn’t just about fun and laughter, it’s also about the pain of breakups, heartbreak, and reunions.
Aju: I am a person who came into cinema through friendship and continue to survive in cinema through the power of friendship. I think friendships are eternal, they will be there till your last breath. “Saturday Night” is about this kind of friendship. Color film! Nivin has fake affection and there is humor in that too. And the audience loves to watch it. After “LAD” audience can watch such Nivin in this film.
Tell us more about the “Saturday Night” characters…
Nivin: I play a character named Stanley who will do anything for friends. The film tells the story of four friends and their eventful journey. The film places great importance on emotions.
Aju: I play this character called Poocha Sunil. I’m that guy you can see in any band that holds them together. This is Pucha.
Aju is quite experienced in public relations. Nivin, did you feel like taking notes from him?
Aju: Who says? It has connections from Kashmir to Kanyakumari.
Nivin: I think such things are very personal. Some like it. But I’m a bit introverted by nature. As I want my films to reach the maximum audience, I actively promote them. Otherwise, I like being out of the limelight and I don’t think there’s anything wrong with that. I always think that I will draw my energy for the next film from the previous one.
Aju is about to sign while Nivin is turning down many projects. Are you very picky?
Nivin: I only get happiness when I am involved in projects that really amaze me. I haven’t decided my next film. I will only make a film if it excites me.
Aju: This is something I know personally. After ‘Thattathin Marayathu’, Nivin was inundated with offers. I remember Nivin saying that he only wants to do films that have recall value. Movies that will stand the test of time and give him immense satisfaction when he revisits them. At that time, he had only a negligible amount as a bank balance. I have also reduced the number of films in the recent past. I think people are becoming more aware of cinema than ever before. I think we need to show a little more responsibility to the audience now.
