an actor Nikhil Siddharth no introduction needed. This heartthrob is currently basking in the success of his recent hit film Karthikeya 2. This thriller has done absolutely and amazingly well not only at the Telugu box office but also in other languages. Directed by Chandoo Mondeti, Karthikeya 2 recently aired on Zee5 now after its successful theatrical release. In an exclusive chat with Bollywood Life, here’s what Nikhil has to say about the success, the euphoria, audience response, Bollywood debut and his upcoming pan-Indian film Spy.
First Nikhil…Congratulations on the success of the film. Karthikeya 2 broke many records and performed extremely well at the box office. It’s not something you didn’t expect. So how does it feel.
Thank you. It feels like a dream. Two months since the premiere and it’s still playing in theaters. What more could I ask for? It’s definitely a dream come true. Karthikeya 2 proved that if you come up with a film with watchable content, nothing can stop the audience from coming to the theatres. No matter where you come from or what language you speak, you can entertain the audience.
I am overwhelmed by all the love from the audience. They gave us the confidence and courage to come up with many such stories in the future. I would like to thank them as well as the media for supporting us. And to those social media influencers who owned this movie and promoted it so much, thanks to you.
Did you ever think that this movie would be such a big hit?
We were confident that this would be a hit and we had certain expectations as well. But the way it crossed the line, we didn’t think about it at all. It grossed $2 million overseas and in India, we’re still counting. We blindly believed in telling a story that we were sure would resonate with everyone, regardless of their age.
Whose call was it to release the film in other languages?
Me and Chandoo had this thought in mind and shared it with our producers. Abhishek Agarwal is popular in Bollywood and other industries also for making another amazing movie called Kashmir Files which again needs no introduction. Thanks to them for encouraging our thought and taking the risk of releasing the film in multiple languages even though it cost them a bomb. We were all confident that every penny we spent would definitely come back to us.
What has been the response from the media and audiences apart from those from the Telugu states?
It’s wonderful. The love they showered on us and how impressed they are with Telugu films, it’s so visible. Sir Anupam Kher organized a press show in Mumbai and the media reaction after the screening is something I will never forget. Coming into the audience, I remember how three elderly women walked towards me after a public performance in one of the cities. They said, “Thank you for making this movie.” It was such a warm feeling.
We tried to launch Karthikeya in Tamil Nadu. But this did not happen for various reasons. But we are glad that we were able to do Karthikeya 2 and we did well there as well.
What next? Are you making your Bollywood debut?
I really don’t need a Bollywood debut, especially after seeing the love the audience showered on me. But yes, I got offers. In fact, many have expressed interest in collaborating for my upcoming films. I hope it will work for Spy. Spy is once again a pan-Indian film with a never-before-told story. It is one of India’s greatest secrets. It’s also going to be big.
