The death of Queen Elizabeth II has drawn mixed reactions from people across the globe.

For some, the announcement of her death by Buckingham Palace yesterday was a moment of sadness; for others, it is one of reflection on the negative impact of the institution she represented on other nations, while for another set of people, they mourned the queen in strange, and funny fashion.

This was the case of Nigerian celebrities’ singers Naira Marley, Portable and actress, Carolyn Hutchings.

On hearing then death of the queen, Naira Marley wrote on his Instagram account: “Your Forefathers will be disappointed. Rest in peace, Ma.” The singer’s post was also accompanied by a video that displayed his image, a monochrome image of the queen, next a hand tattooed with face of the deceased queen. It is however unclear if the hand is his.

Portable on the other hand, mourned the queen with a silly and hurriedly crafted song incorporating a now popular line – Charlie Lo Kan, meaning it is Charles time to rule. The song almost sad and dirge-like elicited laughs from his fans.

Meantime, actress Carolyna Hutchings celebrated the queen’s death with the revelation on Instagram that her daughter was named after the deceased. The post features the actress’ image side by side with the queen’s and reads:

“I literally named my daughter after her … regardless, she was a strong woman … the QUEEN. Crown emoji”.

Hutchings post however attracted mixed reactions too, some of praise for the deceased and a few negative comments. Such as jenniferjoanne, “You named your daughter after a woman who colonized your country, stole from your land, and enslaved your people???? OKAY.”

Hutchings, clapped back, “@_jenniferjoanne my choice … same way people named their kids after those that sold Nigeria out of greed.”

Whatever else may be said about the exchange, it is interesting to know that both sides agreed, that Nigeria at one point was sold off.

Before her death on September 8, 2022, Buckingham Palace revealed that Queen Elizabeth II had suffered from ‘episodic mobility problems’ since last year.
