2013 The last of us managed to connect with even gamers who don’t normally play horror titles, so it makes sense that HBO chose the massively popular IP for their first high-profile video game adaptation.
Of course, fans of the genre know that Survival Horror games have always featured compelling plots and characters, and their slower pace and epistolary storytelling tactics make them uniquely suited to complex narratives. And with so many memorable horror campaigns just begging for big-budget adaptations, we decided to compile a list of six horror games that also deserve the HBO treatment that The last of us it’s up.
While this list is based on personal opinion, we’re going to focus on titles that are more suited to long-term storytelling without necessarily breaking the bank when it comes to special effects. We also won’t include games that already have adaptations, so don’t expect games like Little nightmares or Silent Hill 2 in the list.

6. Dead by Daylight
I know it seems counterintuitive to present an experience focused solely on online gameplay in an article about TV adaptations, but Dead by Daylight has a surprising amount of in-depth knowledge for a multiplayer game. There’s nearly seven years of slasher-inspired horror stories to choose from here, not to mention enough survivors to keep the body count high for several seasons.
Ideally, a Dead by Daylight the adaptation will follow the young survivors as they investigate the Entity and its murderous minions, pursued by eccentric killers along the way. And since Warner Brothers already owns characters like Freddy Krueger and Annabelle, a true HBO production might even give us some fun crossovers.
5. Convicted: Criminal background
Inspired by movies like Seven and The silence of the Lambsof Monolith Condemned games were already cinematic in nature, telling brutal stories of rogue serial killers and city-wide epidemics of violence. With so much interesting material to work with, smart writers could easily expand the events of these games into quality horror television for several seasons in the vein of a more action-packed A true detective – as long as they tone down the absurd sci-fi/fantasy elements of the games.
Damn it, huh Condemned the show could even work as a police procedural, with each episode dealing with a different Metro City geek and slowly building to a terrifying confrontation with the infamous serial killer X.
4. Unclear
I’m a big fan of Robert Rodriguez The facultywhich is why I’ve always had a soft spot for Hydravision Unclear games. Originally rejected as cooperative Resident Evil clones, the games eventually gained a cult following, and the first title even earned a high-definition remaster in 2016. And with the growing popularity of youth- and adult-oriented horror shows, it would make a lot of sense to transform this underrated gem into a series.
Most often set in a monster-infested high school (with the sequel moving to a university campus), Unclear the adaptation can be inspired by Buffy and Todd and the Book of Pure Evilcombining teenage drama with monster encounters.
This hypothetical show would be even better if the producers committed to making it an early 2000s piece with music from Sum 41!
3. Bioshock
No gamer ever forgets the first time they visit Rapture. One of the most iconic settings in video game history, it makes sense that fans clamor for a Bioshock adaptation for years. And while a 90-minute movie chronicling the events of the first game could be a lot of fun, I think Bioshock could also benefit from a more consciously directed prequel series chronicling the final days of Rapture before the crap hit the proverbial propeller.
Come to think of it, a story following Fontaine as he tries to turn his criminal empire into a full-fledged rebellion while Andrew Ryan loses control of his underwater “paradise” could be wildly entertaining, with the end result working as both a tragic political thriller and an atmospheric horror show.
2. American McGee’s Alice
American McGee’s Takeover Alice in Wonderland remains my favorite version of the classic story, combining darkly compelling visuals with legitimately endearing character moments. Naturally, I think these qualities would work in other mediums as well, with a more adult-oriented adaptation of Alice perfect for a binge-worthy limited series. Whether it’s adapting the original game or the underrated sequel, there’s enough madness here for everyone.
That being said, this is one franchise that would work much better in animation than in live action, as we’ve seen before with Alice: Other lands shorts that McGee released in 2015. Not only would this keep the budget reasonable, but it would also allow for even more trippy imagery. Also, we would have kept Susie Brann as the iconic voice of Alice.
Editor’s note: We learned this in January 2022 American McGee’s Alice was getting a small screen adaptation from Radar Pictures, but we haven’t heard an update since then.
1. Alan Wake
A passionate love letter to various forms of horror media, Alan Wake could make the transition from video game to TV show easier than any other entry on this list. After all, the game is now episodic in nature, with levels inspired by everything from Twin Peaks to Twilight Zone and even The X-Files. Plus, the mind-blowing story would have worked even better if it had been given more time to breathe, making this my number one pick for a horror game that deserves a limited series.
And with streaming shows like Strange things and Midnight Mass proving that audiences are still hungry for stories inspired by Stephen King, there’s no doubt in my mind that Alan Wake the series was going to be a huge hit, especially with the sequel coming soon.
