Four women attending a fetish convention in South Texas are thrown into the dark world of obsession and murder when a deformed serial killer sets his sights on them.
In search of the best and worst movies, including documentaries, shot in the Alamo City, the Express-News pulled IMDb ratings on 113 films. IMDb lists 668 movies shot at least partly in the Alamo City. However, for this story, the Express-News only focused on films with at least 100 user-generated ratings on IMDb, an online database that bills itself as “the world’s most popular and authoritative source for movie, TV and celebrity content.”
“A Darker Fifty Shades: The Fetish Set,” written and directed by Shane Wheeler, was shot in San Antonio and Lytle, according to IMDb. It has a rating of 2.6 stars out of 10 on the platform.
San Antonio’s iconic and big budget movies ranked fairly low on IMDb.

For example, “Selena,” which was filmed in Aransas Pass, Corpus Christi, Houston and San Antonio in 1996, ranks No. 30, the data shows. The movie was released two years after the iconic Tejano singer and Corpus Christi native was killed, and it enjoys a 6.8 rating on IMDb.
“Selena was not all that to begin with,” wrote user wolfmoon2 in their review of the film. “I lived in the same neighborhood she did. I didn’t know her personally, but heard enough about her to dislike her. When she died, I didn’t much care. She was treated like a goddess here.”

Other users lambasted the film for its “horrible” script, “hideous dialogue” and “incompetent direction” by the filmmaker, Gregory Nava.
The 2000 film “Miss Congeniality” includes a scene in which the contestants show off their talents in front of the Alamo. Another portion of the pageant is set at the Arneson River Theatre along the River Walk. It’s ranked No. 48 at 6.3 stars.
Others include films by Robert Rodriguez, who went to high school in San Antonio. “Once Upon a Time in Mexico” is rated 6.3 stars and is No. 49 on the list. “Spy Kids” ranks No. 70 and has 5.6 stars. “Spy Kids II: Island of Lost Dreams” ranks No. 75 with 5.3 stars.
Of Rodriguez’s work on the “Spy Kids” franchise, user jusjery wrote: “What happened to Robert Rodriguez? You made such good movies but this was a disaster film. Please don’t even watch it.”
The best San Antonio movies
“West of Memphis,” “The Big Parade” and “Ernie & Joe: Crisis Cops” are tied on IMDb for being the highest rated films made in San Antonio. The three films have 7.9 stars.
“Ernie & Joe: Crisis Cops” follows a pair of officers with the San Antonio Police Department mental health unit as they work to divert people away from jail and into mental health treatment.
The HBO documentary, filmed over 2 1/2 years, followed Ernie Stevens and fellow officer Joe Smarrow as they responded to calls throughout San Antonio. The 97-minute film, directed by Jenifer McShane, won awards at South by Southwest and the San Antonio Film Festival.
“The Big Parade” stars John Gilbert as the young American soldier who goes off to war in the trenches of World War I. Renée Adorée is the French woman who falls in love with him. The 1925 silent movie includes battle scenes filmed at Fort Sam Houston.
The 2012 film “West of Memphis,” co-written by Amy J. Berg, produced by Peter Jackson and Damien Echols, is a documentary that tells the story of the fight to stop the state of Arkansas from executing an innocent man. Among the filming locations are Arkansas, Memphis and San Antonio.
“Wings,” the first big Hollywood film to premiere in San Antonio, was the first film to receive the Academy Award for Best Picture. The 1927 silent war movie has a 7.6 rating on IMDb. It is ranked at No. 7.
Other highlights on IMDB were “Waking Life,” an animated drama and fantasy by Richard Linklater (7.7 stars). The trailer for the film, which ranks at No. 5, includes a building that looks like the Crockett Hotel in downtown San Antonio.
“Pee-wee’s Big Adventure” ranks No. 19 at 7 stars, and “Toy Soldiers” comes in at No. 37 at 6.6. stars.
