Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, has compared her wedding to Prince Harry to the release of Nelson Mandela

New friends

Speaking about setting up a new life in California, the Duchess admitted that Prince Harry is not the only one living away from his old support network.

“I didn’t have any friends up here,” she said.

They are now busy surprising nursery parents by attending children’s birthday parties with Archie, with Meghan left amused after another mum said she was ‘not sure’ if she would be allowed to join her in inflatable castle.

“Of course you can come in,” Megan told her.

Their new circle includes “close friend” Victoria Jackson, a makeup artist who lent them her ranch for the magazine photo shoot and recent 41st birthday party after being introduced by Gloria Steinem.

Tyler Perry, the producer who let them use his home when they moved from Canada to L.A., had never met them before he came to “rescue” them, Megan said.

He got in touch after the wedding to tell Meghan he “can only imagine what it was like”, inviting her to call him if she ever needed support.

She did so, laying out Sussex’s take on her royal life at the time and feeling: “Sometimes you get to tell your life story to a stranger on a plane, as opposed to some of the people closest to you.”

From Frogmore to Montecito

The couple still have their UK home, Frogmore Cottage, although the Duchess used their recent platinum anniversary trip to clear out and take some belongings back to the US.

“It was bittersweet, you know? Knowing that none of it had to be this way,” Megan said.

About their house hunt, she said they’ve been looking in Montecito and their potential house “keeps coming up online in searches.”

“We didn’t have a job, so we just weren’t going to come and see this house,” she said. “It was not possible. It’s like when I was younger and you were window shopping – like I don’t want to go and look at all the things I can’t afford. This doesn’t feel good.”

But after seeing it, they told the estate agent they “had to get this house” and bought it for $14.65m (£12.6m).

“One of the first things my husband saw when we walked around the house were those two palm trees,” she said. “See how they’re connected at the bottom? He says, “My love, this is us.”

“And now every day when Archie walks past us, he says, ‘Hi, mom. hi dad
