After dating for seven years, Singaporean actors Nick Teo, 33, and Hong Ling got engaged on August 16, 2022.
That day was also Hong’s 28th birthday.
Mother ship spoke to the lovebirds after they announced their engagement, who shared that they were so caught up in the flurry of interviews and meet-and-greets with loved ones that it took a while for their status as newlyweds to sink in.
He may get married earlier than expected
One thing that has changed since they met their friends and family is that they are considering moving their wedding date forward.
Theo explained that even with all the planning they’ll need to do, they expect to be ready to go “late next year or early 2024.”
Hong chimed in with, “We’ll see how things go and get married when we’re ready.”
Pushing the date forward has nothing to do with their parents’ wishes, as the couple are “very blessed” to have families who never pushed them to tie the knot, despite the couple dating for seven years.
As Hong said, “My position is quite strong – I don’t want to get married because of others or because of social pressure. We’ve always said we’ll get married when we feel the time is right.”
Slipping on Theo’s engagement ring
With all the jewelry shopping the couple has done over the years, Teo admitted he’s “pretty confident” he knows Hong’s ring size.
However, the two-carat brilliant-cut diamond ring he spent more than a month picking out turned out to be one size too big and is currently at the jeweler for resizing.
Although he said it was the most expensive thing he’s ever bought, he argued it was worth it because “it’s not often you make such a big ticket purchase in your lifetime.”
He joked: “I was really worried she wasn’t going to like it and I found out she didn’t even look at the ring during the proposal. Our friends joked that she said ‘I do’ without even looking at the ring.”
In fact, his worries were for naught as Hong gushed about how she likes it so much that she intends to wear the ring every day (except when filming dramas, of course).
It’s not an official house search yet
Although Teo and Hong have discussed their future home — one that’s big enough for the two children they hope to have — they’re not exactly shopping for one right now.
That’s because there is some time before Hong reaches the three-year mark since she bought her apartment in Balestier.
According to the Inland Revenue Service of Singapore (IRAS), no Seller Stamp Duty (SSD) is payable on residential properties after a three-year holding period.
Hong estimated the three-year mark to be at the end of 2023, which would coincide with their earliest wedding date.
They intend to live together only after they are married.
To have their own rooms for practical reasons
Some couples may cringe at the thought of sleeping apart so soon after getting married, but Hong and Teo say that personal space is very important to them, especially when they have acting projects at hand.
Theo explained:
“She needs a lot of time to herself whenever she’s busy with work, and the reverse is also true. We have discussed having our own rooms even after we move in together because we need our own space when things get busy.
I will probably move to another room when my schedule is tight because I don’t want to disturb her rest. Our work schedules can be very erratic and whenever possible we would like the other party to have a regular schedule and not be disturbed by the early mornings and late nights when we are filming.”
Hong, who is a self-proclaimed light sleeper, added that she doesn’t think this arrangement will affect their relationship because it will only be applied when the situation calls for it.
The couple was also open about their plans to go to marriage counseling in the near future.
Acknowledging that it “may have been a taboo subject in the past”, Hong acknowledged that times have changed and that going to such sessions is for “a better future”.
theo said
“We don’t know what married life is like, so I think marriage counseling will help us in that aspect. For example, there may be things that we shut down because we are afraid to talk about it, but there will be a place to discuss it during such sessions, and this can reduce the potential problems that we have in the future.”
