The (Bergen) Record is losing its strongest journalist.
Terrence MacDonald is leaving to establish a New Jersey bureau for States Newsroom, a nonprofit news organization that already has operations in 22 states.
“Today is my last day at The Record. State Newsroom is opening a bureau in New Jersey and they asked me to run it,” McDonald said on Twitter. “I’m starting on Monday and we’ll be launching the site soon.”
He joined The Record in 2019 after spending ten years as The Jersey Journal, the Hudson County daily newspaper that is part of the NJ.com network. Began his career in journalism working for weekly papers in Bloomfield and Montclair.
Most recently, McDonald led the successful campaign to merge The Record into two other Gannett-owned newspapers. The union, affiliated with CWA’s NewsGuild in New York, was approved last month.
McDonald emerged as a critic of Gannett.
“In less than five years, Gannett has made everyone a shadow of their former self,” he said in February when the unionization decision was announced.
McDonald will now be competing with his old employer, whose Trenton office has shrunk by more than 80% over the past decade.
State Newsroom says their funding comes from individual contributors and institutional grants.
“Unlike virtually every other for-profit and for-profit media outlet, we do not run ads of any kind, nor do we accept corporate donations or underwriting,” the company says on its website.
