NEW DELHI: A 25-year-old man was arrested for allegedly blackmailing a woman by threatening to make her private pictures public after befriending her on Instagram.
The arrested man has been identified as Sanny Chauhan, a resident of Indore, Madhya Pradesh. A mobile phone and three SIM cards have been recovered from him, police said.
On January 12, a woman approached police and told them that in July last year, she came in contact with a boy on Instagram.
“She said, they gradually developed friendship and exchanged their WhatsApp numbers. The man used to text her on WhatsApp regularly and had won her trust over time. She said, later, they developed intimacy and even stripped naked for each other on video calls. The man recorded her semi-nude videos and started blackmailing her,” said deputy commissioner of police (central) Shweta Chauhan.
Police said the man had already extorted over Rs 1.2 lakh and was demanding Rs 70,000 more. “As the woman was hesitant in paying more money, the man threatened her of sending her videos to her husband or making it public on social media. The woman then reported the matter to police and a case was registered. With the help of technical surveillance, the accused was arrested,” the DCP said.
The accused disclosed he had made accounts on Instagram, Facebook and WhatsApp to randomly send friendship requests to women.
