After Prince Harry and Meghan Markle stepped back as working royals, they gave numerous interviews airing the family’s dirty laundry. So it’s no surprise that when they returned to the UK, things were awkward with the Sussexes and Harry’s relatives. Now that the couple have released a documentary series on Netflix and Harry has written his memoirs, no one is sure if the Duke and Duchess will return to England for the coronation of King Charles III and if anyone will speak to them.
One of the last times Meghan and Harry were at a royal event, the prince was seen talking briefly to just one member of his family. Here’s what the Duke of Sussex told his cousin Zara Tindall outside the church, according to a lip reader.
Prince Harry was not happy with the seats in the church
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex were together in the UK for Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee in June 2022. They attended a Thanksgiving service at St Paul’s Cathedral, which marked their first joint event as non-working royals. Their demotion was on display for the crowd to see as they lost the prime seating positions they were used to and were relegated to seats in the middle of the second row.
According to royal biographer Tom Bower, Harry wasn’t thrilled with the seats and decided he and his wife should at least sit closest to the aisle, so he asked Princess Beatrice to come down. However, the Warden told Harry that this would not be possible, and when the prince demanded to know who had issued this order, the Warden replied, “Your grandmother.”
The lip reader reveals what Harry said to Zara outside the church
Cameras were on the Sussexes as they also left the church and caught the prince saying a few words to Princess Anne’s daughter.
For those wondering what they’re talking about, professional lip reader Jeremy Freeman told The Mirror that Harry made a rather unusual comment to his cousin, telling Zara: “You’ve lost weight.”
Zara gave birth to her son Lucas a year earlier. Freeman noted that Zara replied to Harry: “No, I’m not. How do you know?” Harry seemed to reply, “I know, it’s nice in pink! I didn’t know if you were going to wear blue, pink, orange, green, grey.
The Duke of Sussex could then be seen making a slight gesture in front of Zara before he and Meghan saw that the car to take them away from the church had arrived.
The Sussexes were greeted with boos as they descended the stairs
After this quick chat with Zara, the Sussexes walked down the cathedral steps to the waiting car. However, they received a reception from the crowd they didn’t seem ready for.
Even with the loud ringing of the church bells, boos could be heard from those gathered outside the church. The Duke and Duchess tried to control their reactions to the mixture of cheers and boos. But at this point, as many royal watchers noted, Harry and Meghan couldn’t really hide the disappointment on their faces.
