The United Kingdom witnessed history being made when a man of colour got appointed as its Prime Minister. While most people depended on television and laptop screens to watch events in and around 10 Downing Street in London, Larry the cat witnessed it all in person.

Recently, Larry became a subject of great importance after he was noticed during Rishi Sunak’s first public address as the Prime Minister of Britain.

Cameras caught the feline paying attention to Sunak’s speech from a corner. The image of Larry at Sunak’s first address was a hit on social media.

Who is Larry the cat of 10 Downing Street?

This feline is no ordinary stray cat. Larry was hired in 2011 during Prime Minister David Cameron’s tenure to reduce the mice population at the Prime Minister’s residence. He is the Chief mouse catcher of the PM’s residence.

Larry was recommended to the former PM by Battersea Dogs and Cats Home, considering his mice-catching skills. However, Larry felt like he did not have to prove his skills after moving to the PM’s residence. Reportedly, Cameron was on the verge of firing Larry in 2012 after he proved useless. Larry even earned the nickname “Lazy Larry” as he refrained from lifting a paw to catch a mouse.

Surprisingly, Larry managed to remain at the Prime Minister’s residence after Cameron and two other Prime Ministers moved out.

The cat, who has his own doorman, is quite a star on social media. He has 797K Twitter followers and is known to keep the public updated about what’s going on in 10 Downing Street.

Recently, a post relating to Sunak’s meeting with King Charles was shared on Larry’s page. It stated, “Rishi Sunak is off to see the King; unclear if it’s to be appointed Prime Minister or if Charles would like to borrow some money.”

Also, when Boris Johnson was about to step down from the PM’s position, Larry tweeted, “I can no longer, in good conscience, live with this Prime Minister. Either he goes, or I do.”

Well, Larry has opinions and he knows he is important.
