By Medha Chawla: When celebrities from the likes of Gigi Hadid and Gal Gadot to Alia Bhatt and Anushka Sharma proclaim their backing in a particular fashion trend, there is no reason you should not be taking notes. So, getting straight to the point: add a vest (or waistcoat) to your wardrobe right away!

Chic and casual in equal parts, a vest is a staple you can rock to work, a casual day out with friends and even to a party. We’re not even kidding! Showing you how are the celebrities whose fashion game is always on top of our radar.

Alia Bhatt, very recently, stepped out in Mumbai wearing a chocolate brown lined vest and trousers set from the label Summer Somewhere. The comfy-looking co-ord set appeared to be a befitting pick for a casual outing, and Alia teamed it with a cross-body sling bag, dainty hoops and a pair of black sliders.

Unlike Alia’s linen ensemble that screamed comfort, her Heart of Stone co-star Gal Gadot showed how to exude absolute bosslady vibes in a vest and trousers set. She wore a crisp and tailored ivory set during Netflix’s Tudum event held in Brazil. Dainty hoops and sunglasses were her styling picks as she strut in style.

This ivory set is not the only vest or waistcoat she wore during the Tudum event. She flaunted a black pinstriped co-ord set as well. The tailored outfit featured a figure-accentuating silhouette. Minimal, classy and casual but business wear look – she got it all right with this ensemble.

Back home, Anushka Sharma made a strong case for a pinstriped vest when she headed for a date night with husband Virat Kohli. Instead of keeping it all striped, she teamed her white blazer vest with a pair of solid white relaxed trousers.

Kareena, on the other hand, gave it an athleisure twist. She teamed a zipper halter-neck vest with comfy flap trousers. Her innate glam, ivory heels and sunglasses upped the oomph quotient.

When Kendall Jenner ditched her top for a vest, stepped out wearing it with black trousers, a peppy tote and a pair of slider, we knew the trend of waistcoats-sans-blazers would only soar higher. It also has the validation of Taylor Swift.

You can party in these humble-looking vests as well. Bella Hadid served a dramatic look for a shoot with Dior where she donned a black vest with a tulle skirt. When Shanaya Kapoor teamed her white waistcoat with a mini skirt, she reinstated the work-to-party prowess of this silhouette.

Celebrity validation apart, here are four legit reasons you should consider adding a vest to your wardrobe:

A timeless staple

A good wardrobe is not the one that’s loaded with clothes. It is the collection of some trust-worthy basics and staples that makes it a strong sartorial heaven. Not having enough staples can often land you in ‘I don’t have anything to wear’ situation. A tailored vest is a timeless silhouette you can rely on for any and every occasion.

Versatile

From a pair of relaxed wide-legged trousers, to a skimpy shirt, casual shorts to a tulle skirt – sky is the limit when one talks about the styling possibilities while rocking a crisp and tailored vest.

Great addition to work wardrobe

Are you simply bored of wearing those regular shirts and blazers to work? Give your work closet a breath of fresh air by adding a vest. You can opt for a pinstriped number or a monotone linen creation, and team it with a matching pair of pants.

Can be layered

Yes, a vest is a stunning summer staple. But mind you, you can effortlessly take it to your winter wardrobe as well. Just layer it with a trench coat or a blazer, and you’re good to go looking like an ultra-chic boss lady.

Sometimes, less is more. Don’t we all know of this fashion mantra?. Similarly, at times basics are what make the loudest noise. And that’s the takeaway we’re taking from the never-ending popularity of wearing waistcoats sans blazers.
