Review by: Russell D’Silva
If Bollywood is adept at creating our high-quality cinema that has also been a big hit in a particular genre, then it must be thrillers. And among the pantheon of great thrillers produced by the Hindi film industry, some like Kaun and Ittefaq (the 1969 original) stand out for nailing that claustrophobic environment that ratchets up the tension in any suspenseful plot.
Dhokha Round D Corner, directed by Kookie Gulati and starring Khushalii Kumar, R Madhavan, Darshan Kumaar and Aparshakti Khurana, attempts something similar, albeit with an undercurrent of sensuality. Does it take its place in that pantheon as well? Well, it almost does, and it’s as pleasant a surprise as anyone could have hoped for, with a dearth of really good Bollywood after AndhaDhun. So, are you excited about what to watch this weekend or what to watch this week and wondering if Dhokha Round D Corner is worth your time? What are you talking about
Sanchi (Khushali Kumar) and Sinha’s (R. Madhavan) facade of a happy marriage crumbles when terrorist Gul (Aparshakti Khurana) enters their apartment and takes Sanchi hostage. The more Inspector Malik (Darshan Kumaar) tries to solve the situation, the more he and the audience are drawn into different perspectives of what is really going on

What’s new
Full credit to Kookie Gulati and Neeraj Singh for the many twists and turns they weave into their script and how none of them venture into excessive territory, keeping you on your toes till the very end. Additional credit to Cookie Gulati for directing this screenplay – a multi-point narrative with tight-rope twists could so easily have fallen off the rails, but he weaves it all into one tense, addictive ride. Of course, this wouldn’t be possible with some good performances, with Khushalii Kumar in the lead walking a fine line between sensual, vulnerable and devious, while Madhavan and Darshan Kumaar give her good support in their shortened screen time. Amit Roy’s cinematography, Dharmendra Sharma’s editing and Amar Mohile’s background score also combine well to enhance the mysterious atmosphere.
What is not
The main disappointment is Aparshakti Khurana, who tries hard but just fails to live up to his role. In addition, the production values could have been much better as well, as they pretty much botched the good work of the other departments. Some of the subplots also just don’t work and only manage to bog down the pace.
BL Judgment
With little to complain about, Dhokha Round D Corner is a tense, edgy, claustrophobic Bollywood thriller done well after years, with twists that keep you guessing and performances that pack them. Definitely an engaging watch for thriller lovers. I’m going with 3.5 out of 5 stars.
