According to the authorities, complaints regarding the offensive remarks surfaced soon after the live session, leading the police to initiate an investigation. Upendra, who had initially delivered the remarks on Saturday, promptly removed the video from his social media accounts and issued an apology in response to the backlash.
In a statement posted on his official Facebook account, Upendra expressed regret for his words and explained the situation. “During the Facebook and Instagram live, due to a slip of the tongue, a proverbial sentence was used. Once I became aware that it had hurt the sentiments of people, I took immediate action and deleted the live video from my social media accounts. I sincerely apologise for the statement,” the post read.
The case against Upendra has been registered under section 3(1)(r)(s) of the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act. Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) for Bengaluru South, P Krishnakant, confirmed the registration of the case and assured that a thorough investigation is underway.
