Vivek Agnihotri directorial The Kashmir Files and R Madhavan’s Rocket: The Nambi Effect are said to be in the Oscar race. And if the latest buzz is anything to go by, Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Gangubai Kathiawadi starring Alia Bhatt may also join the list of controversies. The film received a positive response, with critics highly praising Alia’s performance as well as the film’s scope and direction. The film, which is based on Hussain Zaidi’s book ‘Mafia Queens of Mumbai’, tells the story of Alia’s titular character, who was inspired by the real-life sex worker Gangubai, who rose to become a mafia queen in Mumbai. RRR, meanwhile, opened in theaters on March 25, reached the coveted Rs 1,000 crore club within 16 days of its worldwide release. It is now the third highest grossing Indian film of all time. Rajamouli finds it both satisfying and unexpected to see the NTR-starrer Ram Charan and Jr. grow to become the most-watched Indian film on Netflix, with more than 47 million hours of total watch time with subtitles on 15 other languages. The film received acclaim for its commendable performances, magnanimous cinematic scale, action and drama from around the world. It also won Ram Charan and Jr. NTR unanimous praise and appreciation from audiences and critics alike. The film was also praised by several Hollywood directors, including the Russo brothers.

The selection is made by the Film Federation of India (FFI), the apex body of film producers, distributors, exhibitors and studio owners, and since 1957, when Mehbub Khan’s Mother India lost by a mere vote, all two Indian films — Salaam Mira Nair’s Bombay (1988) and Aamir Khan’s Lagaan (2001) – made it to the Oscar nominations list.
