Inter Miami forward Gonzalo Higuain called out abuse from fans in an interview with ESPN and said insults and harassment “take lives”.
Higuain came under heavy criticism when he played for Argentina and was part of the team that lost three consecutive finals from 2014-2016.
The striker retired from international duty in 2018, saying the decision would be “to the delight of many people” in his home country. And the 34-year-old former Real Madrid, Juventus and Napoli player said he was no longer ready to turn the other cheek to criticism.
“We have to be more aware of the damage that insults can cause because sometimes it’s irreparable and people don’t realize it,” Higuain told ESPN.
“I have bowed my head for 15 years in the face of insults, personally they have never said anything to me and there comes a point when I will not tolerate bowing my head any more.”
“Why don’t we have the right to react? And why does someone who is not famous have the right to do it? Because we play football – some make more money, some don’t, we all deserve respect.
“If you are going to criticize me, accept the answer, if not, don’t criticize me. Accept that I will answer you. I am tired of being silent and not responding to insults. If it happens to me personally, I will not tolerate any more disrespect, even less in front of my family.”
Higuain said the birth of his daughter helped him shake off the insults, but added that many don’t appreciate the struggles he went through.
“People don’t realize that you have three failures with Argentina, my mother died and on top of that they put you through a lot of insults,” added Higuain.
“At the moment it has affected me and as time goes on I don’t see it that way, but we have to give it importance because it creates damage that is almost irreparable.”
“What makes me angry about memes is that they’ve become normalized and it’s as common as going to the supermarket and it causes irreparable damage. Something that takes lives is normalized.”
