Kalki Koechlin has proved her mettle in films like Zindagi Na Milegi Dobrara, Margarita with a Straw, Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani and many more. In her new interview, the actress talks about being typecast in the industry because of the color of her skin.
She revealed that although it is said to be a great phase for all age actors, Kalki said that discrimination based on an actor’s complexion is still rampant in the film industry. “I had a director say to me, ‘I think you’re going to do well in this role because you’re playing a psychotic in it.’ This is the kind of perception people have about me and I feel quite disappointed. Obviously, because of the color of my skin, I can only play these upper-class characters,” she told Hindustan Times.
Kalki is also aware that she is not the only one who suffers from this practice. She said that many dark skinned actors are also given type roles and given maid roles. She feels everyone is put in boxes and is waiting for the right role to come along to challenge her as an actor.
Born in Pondicherry to French parents, Kohlin, who spent a significant part of her childhood in Auroville and studied drama and theater at Goldsmiths, University of London, will soon be seen in Pushan Kripalani’s The Goldfish, which will have its world premiere on 27- 1st International Busan Film Festival.
The national award-winning actor feels that although OTT has established a lot of work and a chance for talent to emerge, it is still difficult to find good content, whether it is in film or OTT. “If I have one complaint, it’s that there’s too much content to read, and since I always insist on reading the whole thing, not just a summary, it can get exhausting when the content isn’t great,” she said.
