Tiptoeing may be meant for Barbie but in reality, high heels can be a pain point for women and more seriously injure your foot health.
Case in context: Celebrities and fashionistas spotted by paps walking uncomfortably and almost stumbling in their sky high and uncomfortable stilettos. Little do we realize the adverse effects of wearing high heels! “Wearing high heels is fashionable but if you wearing them on daily basis or for prolonged time, you are taking chances with your health,” starts off Seitu Kumar, stylist and a grooming expert.
Pain in the back
However fashionable they look, towering heels can harm you more. “Wearing high heels can change the centre of your gravity causing knee, back and hip pain. Moreover they can cause shortening of muscles and ankle instability, Achilles tendon, nerve damage and deformed toes,” says Seitu Kumar, a former model, stylist and grooming expert.
Bunions
As much as you love wearing heels, it’s good to give your feet a break! “Bunions is becoming so common these days because of overuse of sky high heels and keeping your foot in an inappropriate shape while crunching those poor fingers,” explains Sakshi Singla, creator and stylist.
Wrong posture
Wrong posture while standing and walking in uncomfortable heels specially the luxury segment shoes like LB’s that are surely a badge of honour but can never come under functional footwear category to me And thus such styles leading to pains throughout the body specially lower backaches. “When the feet are put in an uncomfortable position, it reflects badly on the personality. Moreover, high heels with pointed toes can cause injuries and problems like calluses, blisters, hammertoes and ingrown toe nails,” warns Dr Sunil Ahuja, a Delhi-based orthopedist.
Numbness of foot
Numbness of foot and fingers can lead to serious injuries in knees too. While there are many more alarming concerns, even if you do have to wear heels at important occasions, it’s important to buy the correct foot size – neither too tight nor too loose. It has to fit just right and should be comfortable at the same time. “Wearing high heels can damage ligaments and tendon tears so be very careful. Even if you have to wear, do not wear for prolonged time period. It’s advisable to save heels only for very special events,” suggests Dr Sunil Ahuja.
