She knew she was different but Zodwa Wabantu never once imagined she would be called to be a sangoma.
They are embracing everything about themselves, including their calling.
Celebrities in South Africa have opened to accepting their ancestral gifts.
Thabiso Mokhethi learnt about his ancestral gift when he hit rock bottom in his life. The actor and TV presenter had to deal with a lot of grief after losing his parents, siblings, and his marriage.
He opened up in a previous interview with Drum earlier this year and told us that misfortunes brought his ancestral gift to life as he was not aware he had it. It was in 2020 when it all got intense.
“This was shortly after my divorce, I was alone and moved to Bloemfontein and started my life. I was living alone, my calling wanted me to be alone so that I can meet different people and have my dreams and visions that will lead me to that path, and in that process, I was healing.”
He said with his Christian background he had to evolve. It was not an easy to decision to accept his ancestral calling.

“I am still a Christian because accepting my calling doesn’t mean that I am an enemy of God. I am now looking at things from a fresh perspective, I am starting afresh but not from zero. This is my gift from my God and forefathers and it hasn’t taken me away from God instead it has brought me closer.”
Thabiso has bounced back in his career. He hosts a show called UMdende on Mzansi Wethu, where he assists people who receive social grants but have problems with family members.
On the other hand, media personality Zodwa Libram, Zodwa Wabantu to her fans, started the year on a different journey. The dancer and businesswoman answered her calling to be a sangoma.
In a catch-up with Drum she told us that she always knew that her emotional intelligence and being street wise, had some dose of superior power.
“This is not something that I can say I knew about when I was a child.
“I started having dreams in September last year and they just kept getting serious towards December, I knew they were not normal. I got dreams and got a message to visit home and get something from a tree. I dreamt of beads, something not everyone dreams of, even sangomas would do a lot for them to get a direct message like that. I then consulted with the sangoma that I often see for cleansings and consultations, and he put everything into perspective for me.”
Zodwa is aware of the things ancestors can take away from those who dismiss the calling but she also had her terms and conditions.
“They did not take away from me. Sometimes they take cars and houses to show themselves. It’s now up to me to accept and do what I need to do. But I made it very clear to them that I love money and they must not touch it and they must not touch the man I am dating because I love sex,” she adds.
She took her fans through her ancestral journey on the new season of her reality TV show on Moja Love, Zodwa Uncensored.
While Andrea Dondolo, who became a household name as she played Ayanda on SABC 2’s sitcom Stokvel, had to let go of her ego to make the big decision.
The actress, opened up in an Instagram post that she was stubborn about being a sangoma. She says she only surrendered to it when she thought of her son and the consequences.
Speaking to City Press, Andrea said she had known about her calling for years but was in denial. She felt like the timing was just not right. She says she was only a nine-year-old when her grandmother told her that she had a gift.
“I remember the first visitation dream I had when I was nine years old. I was visiting my grandparents at their farm for the holidays. Upon sharing the dream with my grandmother, she said I had a gift. I experienced a lot of spiritual attacks as a child because of it.”
The time came and she could no longer be in denial about her gift to be a sangoma.
“It was the most difficult and heartbreaking decision for my ego but the best for my spirit and wellbeing because things were falling apart and knowing what the gift does to the next generation, I had to think about my son. I could not burden him with the excess of my denials. I had to own up to my share of the gift.”

“I am a fully fledged sangoma who is practising full time for now in my hometown. Some people have not been welcoming of my new journey and have outright rejected me. However, there are those who have embraced me beyond my expectation. They actually make me emotional.”
Musician Anatti, whose given name is Anathi Bhongo Mnyango, got tired of speaking in riddles about his spiritual gift.
The rapper admitted to Drum that with his new song titled, Amadlozi, he was acknowledging his ancestors and continuing on his spiritual journey.
Anatii says he has been on the spiritual journey for a while now. “But I have been giving hints to people about it but without revealing too much.
“I did not really share details of my gift but I do have a spiritual calling,” he adds.
Asked if he is currently going through the initiation process, he says, “No, not at the moment.”
