Designers Rajesh Pratap Singh and duo Pankaj and Nidhi are seasoned fashion week presenters, having had their collections unveiled in several previous events. With their upcoming showcase at FDCI X Lakme Fashion Week, the trio spoke exclusively with iDiva about their collection pieces, how they navigate creative differences and their top picks for the upcoming wedding season. Let’s dive right into it!

1. Give us an insight into your ideation process for this collection. What are some of the key factors you have to keep in mind as a designer creating a new collection, especially one that is showcased at an event like FDCI X Lakme Fashion Week?

Pankaj & Nidhi: Our ideation process is very intuitive. We were feeling optimistic and wanted to create a vibrant collection that uplifts the spirits. We were inspired by Japanese Kimono art forms and Indian ornament to create tactile and luxurious textures. We strive to create a collection that has a unique design aesthetic – an interplay of colours, patterns and has a variety of interestingly cut silhouettes.

Rajesh Pratap Singh: The inspiration behind this collection and its portrayal are the events of the 1950s which resulted in the creation of brand Lakmé.

This year is 70 years since the inception of Lakmé.  A milestone that deserves a befitting celebration.  And a time to pay a tribute to the person who made this possible, Mrs Tata.   I find that story very compelling and I wonder what the times and emotions of that period were when the country was so young, and for me, that’s a riveting thought.  I can only imagine what the conversations between her and Pandit Nehru were and what their idea of modernity was at that time. I can only speculate and surmise. The 1950s had elements of couture which we too have in this collection, in a modern contemporary fashion.

2. What are some of the trends that you are projecting for the upcoming wedding season? What has been the number one demand for your bridal customers?

P&N: For the upcoming wedding season we have introduced some beautiful and bold hues of purples and fuschias. We feel brides would want to embrace a bolder colour palette and go for outfits that create a statement.

RPS: Have steered clear of trends.  We find them second hand. As the finale designer with Mrunal Thakur walking as the showstopper, we have to wait and find out!

3. What is the most exciting/challenging part of showcasing at Lakme Fashion Week?

P&N: We were always making western and contemporary clothes with very unique couture-like craftsmanship. And it was a natural progression for us to start doing couture. We are glad we took this plunge, as it has given us an opportunity to express our creativity to the fullest.

RPS: Lakmé Fashion Week, in partnership with FDCI, is back to being one collaborative platform.  It is back to being physical.  It gets the industry together giving us a voice, a purpose, and a timetable.

4. What advice would you give to the up-and-coming designers who look up to your work?

RPS: That it is not going to be an easy ride. Fashion is a low hanging fruit, so everyone has an opinion.  But if you do have something to say and truly believe in it, then stick to your guns, hang in there, all the best and enjoy the ride.

We cannot wait for the designers to showcase their newest collection because trends are born on the runway, honey! Which of the designers are you most excited about? Tell us in the comments below!
