Kolkata: A second year fashion design student walking back home from City Centre in Salt Lake was allegedly molested by a man in his 40s on Sunday evening. The 20-year-old grabbed the man by his collar, alerted cops passing the area and dragged the man to the police station to be arrested.
The accused, Amit Kumar (42), is a resident of Salt Lake AE block and is an upper division clerk at state forest department. He was booked under IPC section 354 (molestation) and was produced before a Salt Lake court where he was remanded to 14 days of judicial custody.
“The woman said she noticed the man, who was with another person, gesture at her. She felt uncomfortable and thus shifted to extreme left side of the road to increase the gap. Kumar came closer, touched her inappropriately and tried to walk away,” an officer said. Cops said Kumar and his companion had been at a bar nearby before the incident occurred around 8pm.
Kumar’s counsel, Pabitra Biswas, refuted all allegations and claimed the student made up the entire incident. “It was a crowded area. Cops don’t have any witness to support the girl’s claim. The area also has CCTV surveillance. They should check the cameras and provide the footage before the court. It will be clear my client is innocent,” Biswas said.
