With cotton at the intersection of fashion, art and culture, the natural fiber is under inspection at the Fashion for Good Museum.
This month, the interactive Amsterdam-based museum unveiled the “Knowing Cotton Otherwise” exhibition highlighting the relationship between cotton and fashion, the fiber’s role in global cultures, and the sustainable innovations driving its circular transformation.
By mixing styles and stories, Fashion for Good curators Alyxandra Westwood and Sophie van Duren with support from researcher Musoke Nalwoga and artist Sophie Douale shine a light on the lesser known stories behind the fiber while challenging visitors to question cotton’s history, modern-day challenges and its role in fashion innovation.
Like cotton, the exhibition is presented in different phases which will grow and change throughout the year. Local artists have been invited to present work that “connects and intersects with different themes” relating to cotton and its impact on the planet and people to achieve this evolving narrative.
The first phase features artists Benoît Gilles Michel, Caithlin Courtney Chong, Mario Gonsalves, Niño Divino, Noah Cohen, Nsimba Valene and Tasio Bidegain as well as the collectives OSSO Archive, Studio Papa and The Gang is Beautiful who all support and contribute to each other’s projects.
Innovative solutions from Fashion for Good Innovators Oritain and Officina+39, are also used by the artists in their installations, showcasing how changemakers address some of the most challenging aspects of cotton’s production from origin and traceability to dyeing and water use.
“The exhibition invites dialogue, encourages play and sparks wonder in an atmosphere that inspires coming together, exchanging and togetherness. The combination of art, design and science creates a colorful and interactive space that allows visitors to explore, absorb and reflect on their experience with public and educational programs where they can further dive into these topics,” Fashion for Good said.
Fashion for Good Foundation opened the museum in 2018 as a platform to highlight changemakers and how clothes can have a positive impact on people and the environment. Previous exhibitions have focused on the industry’s use of water and the role global fashion weeks have on production. “Knowing Cotton Otherwise” will run for a year.
