Let’s begin with our top story. The Broadway musical The Sound of Music premiered at the recently inaugurated Nita Mukesh Ambani Cultural Centre in Mumbai on Wednesday, May 3rd. Many celebrities such as Kiran Rao, Fatima Sana Shaikh, Mandira Bedi, Geeta Basra and Manish Malhotra turned up for the event. While talking about the Broadway musical, Nita Ambani said, “The Sound of Music is a timeless musical and it brings so much joy to whoever watches it. Not only the children enjoyed it, but we as parents also enjoyed it.” The Sound of Music made its debut on Broadway in 1959 and has since toured over 100 countries and won multiple awards. The musical has also been adapted into an Oscar-winning film.

Moving on. Ayushmann Khurrana said that the Indian film industry is making great strides internationally. At the inaugural event of the 23rd edition of FICCI Frames, the actor said- “The more we’re connected to our roots, the more we’ll move ahead. The more local we go, the more global we reach. Our film industry is at the cusp of global greatness. I am fortunate to be living in a time when the world has become a creative melting pot of culture. I’ll always aspire to contribute to the world of cinema through my craft, in the choices I make, and stories I tell.”

Nawazuddin Siddiqui told Indian Express if the Hindi film industry is struggling theatrically to deliver hits, it is because of its attitude of putting together a project with no story and featuring actors which the audience has rejected multiple times. Nawazuddin said – “The big films are causing the most damage to the industry. In a rare case, something works at the box office for whatever reason. But mostly, if you leave three films, 97 per cent of the films are flopping.”

Meanwhile, Bollywood actor Zayed Khan, known for his films like Main Hoon Na, believes that the films and shows which are being made for the OTT platforms are driven by data and not creativity. During an interview with Bollywood Hungama, the actor recalled being approached for an OTT show. When Zayed told the person he is not ‘vibing’ with the script, he was told that the script sits well with the makers as it is written based on the audience data. Zayed shared – “That is extremely regressive. There are too many people involved who should not be involved in the creative process. It is micro-managing creativity and that is not a good space to be in.”

Filmmaker Sudhir Mishra recently shared his views on fellow director Vivek Agnihotri’s The Kashmir Files. He said- “I think it’s good to see films and make films of all sorts. I disagree with how The Kashmir Files has been used. I am a filmmaker who has a different aesthetic but if somebody says Vivek is not allowed to make Kashmir Files, I will stand with him. Every film should be made. You have to create an atmosphere where films of a different nature are made and people go and see them.”

Meanwhile, Sriram Raghavan has made some acclaimed films like Johnny Gaddar, Andhadhun, and Ek Hasina Thi in his career but the one that shocked his fans was the 2012 film Agent Vinod. The Saif Ali Khan starrer was a disappointment for critics and fans. In a chat with Galatta Plus, Raghavan shared, “One mistake I made is to take it for granted that the story is not vital, the sequences are vital.” Had Agent Vinod done well, it could have been the start of a spy franchise but the film did not yield any such results.” The Andhadhun director also admitted that instead of being a “heady cocktail” it turned out to be a “headache” and the film became “exhausting”.

Anupam Kher recently spoke about why actors nowadays are not vocal about their political ideologies, as compared to their counterparts in the past. Speaking on ANI’s podcast, the actor shared – “I think actors have a huge fan base. In today’s time, it can be easily misconstrued. It can easily get into issues. There is a certain section of people, Dev Anand sahab and Vijay Anand sahab, who supported a particular ideology. They were vocal at the time. This isn’t the case with actors anymore”

Lastly, veteran star couple Hema Malini and Dharmendra celebrated their 43rd wedding anniversary on Tuesday, May 2nd.
