In our top story. A new study on gender dynamics in the Mumbai-based film industry says that 72% of characters in Hindi cinema are played by cis-males with 26% of parts going to cis-females. Titled ‘Lights, Camera, and Time for Action: Recasting Gender Equality Compliant Hindi Cinema’, the study was conducted by the School of Media and Cultural Studies, Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai, through a grant from the US Consulate in Mumbai, a press release said. The complete report was released on Wednesday, 28th June in the presence of actor Vidya Balan, producer Guneet Monga, Producers Guild of India president Shibashish Sarkar, along with Shalini Bharat, director, TISS and Mike Hankey, the US Consul General, Mumbai.
Meanwhile, actor Vidya Balan on Wednesday, 28th June said a lot of her earlier films emerged as box office hits but she wasn’t satisfied playing the romantic interest opposite the male lead. Balan told reporters here – “I wanted more substance. I thought good work is very subjective. I wasn’t contributing anything and felt like I was sleepwalking through those roles and films. At that point, I was offered a film called Ishqiya, the role of a woman who owns her sexuality, your femme fatale and all of that, but there was a simmering strength in her. When I was offered that, I thought, ‘Oh my god! This is what I thought I was waiting for.”
Actor Kangana Ranaut is partnering with producer Sandeep Singh for her next feature film. Touted to be a big-budget production, the film will hit the floors early next year, a press release stated. The makers will announce the director and the title of the project soon. Ranaut, known for movies such as “Fashion”, “Tanu Weds Manu” series, “Queen” and “Panga”, said in a statement – “Sandeep and I have been friends for over 13 years and have wanted to do a film for a long time. Now that we have found the right subject and the role we are all set to roll soon. It is going to be the biggest film of my career and a fantastic role.”
Moving on. Actor Aditya Roy Kapur, at the press conference of The Night Manager in Mumbai, was asked how he reacted when he heard that his contemporary, actor Kartik Aryan will star in Aashiqui 3 which will be directed by filmmaker Anurag Basu. There have also been reports that Dangal fame Fatima Sana Sheikh will co-star with Kartik in the third film in the Aashiqui film franchise. Aditya said, “I mean when I first heard of it people asked me if I wanted to be a part of it. The team that they are putting together, from what we are hearing, is great. And I am looking forward to it. I am sure they’ll do a great job.”
Pakistani singer Shae Gill, who sang the popular song Pasoori with Ali Sethi, has opened up about the recreation that was recently released as a part of Kartik Aaryan and Kiara Advani’s film Satyaprem Ki Katha. Taking to her Instagram stories, Shae said that decision about the recreation wasn’t hers as she does not own the rights to the song. She wrote – “I found out about the remake through fans but also, I wanted to talk about all of the hate that people have been sending the new song. I understand that you love the original so much and I am so grateful. But at the same time, I don’t want you to be sending hate to someone else.”
Meanwhile, Bollywood star Aamir Khan is currently on a break. Following the failure of Laal Singh Chaddha at the box office, Aamir had expressed that he would only embark on a new film when he felt emotionally prepared. Film circles, however, were abuzz as a video showing the actor in a recording studio has gone viral. Though there is no confirmation regarding the nature of Aamir’s activities or whether he is recording a song, it was a sign that the actor is gradually making a comeback. In a video that singer Sona Mohapatra shared on social media, composer Ram Sampath can be seen giving directions to Aamir. Although it doesn’t reveal much, it has sparked the curiosity of Aamir’s fans.
Actor Asin, who has been away from the screen since 2015 after appearing in the comedy-drama All Is Well, deleted photos with her husband Rahul Sharma from Instagram. As soon as her fans noticed, they asked her about her well-being, hoping everything was fine with the former actor and her marriage. Amid rumours of a rocky relationship, Asin clarified on social media that everything is fine. The actor wrote, “In the middle of our summer holiday right now, literally sitting across each other enjoying our breakfast and came across some very imaginative and utterly baseless ‘NEWS’. Reminds of the time we were sitting at home together planning our wedding and we heard that we had broken up. Seriously?! Please do better.”
Lastly, Ravi Kishan’s 21-year-old daughter Ishita Shukla is all set to join the defence forces. The news was shared by BJP MLA Dinesh Khatik in a tweet in Hindi, and Ravi confirmed the same by retweeting it with folded hands and national flag emoji. Dinesh tweeted, “Heartiest congratulations to my friend, senior BJP leader and Gorakhpur MP Shri Ravi Kishan’s daughter Ishita Shukla on becoming ‘Mahila Agniveer’. Now, under the Agnipath Scheme, she will be joining the defence forces. Ishita is an inspiration for the youth of the country. I pray to god for her bright future.”
