Let’s begin with our top story. The controversy around Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone’s song from Pathaan echoed in the Lok Sabha on Monday, 19th December as BSP MP Kunwar Danish Ali slammed those demanding a ban on the movie, saying the job of clearing films should be left to the Central Board of Film Certification. As the Lok Sabha took up issues of urgent importance, the BSP leader said many linked to the ruling party — the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) — were demanding a ban on the film claiming it has hurt Hindu feelings.
Moving on. The nail-biting 2022 FIFA World Cup final on Sunday 18th December, saw Argentina take home the trophy, after winning the penalty shoot-out 4-2 against France. A section of the audience also found joy and pride in seeing Nora Fatehi hit the stage at the closing ceremony of the tournament. The actor sang the FIFA anthem “Light The Sky” and also danced along with the other performers — Emirati singer Balqees, Moroccan pop singer-songwriter Manal, and Iraqi singer Rahma Riad. Nora had earlier shared the anthem on social media, expressing her joy about associating with FIFA.
Actor-Singer Piyush Mishra did not mince his words when speaking about why Bollywood was earning lower than South Indian films nowadays. In a conversation recently, the Gangs of Wasseypur actor said that – “Directors of South Indian film industries are more intelligent, have more IQ and are more innovative compared to Bollywood directors.” The Gulal actor also noted that South Indian languages like Tamil and Malayalam are ‘very old languages’ and parts of ‘very old cultures’, which is why the filmmakers there ‘research very well’ on the ‘detailing of their films’. Mishra, who is also a singer, is set to perform in Raipur as part of his Aarambh Hai Prachand concert series alongside a big band.
Meanwhile, Shooting for Zoya Akhtar‘s live-action musical film The Archies has wrapped. The Netflix movie, set in the 1960s, is the Indian adaptation of the popular American comic Archies Comics. The film marks the acting debut of superstar Shah Rukh Khan‘s daughter Suhana Khan, superstar Sridevi and film producer Boney Kapoor’s daughter Khushi Kapoor, and megastar Amitabh Bachchan’s grandson Agastya Nanda. Mihir Ahuja, Dot, Yuvraj Menda and Vedang Raina also round out the cast of The Archies. The Archies is produced by Akhtar and her longtime collaborator Reema Kagti under their production house Tiger Baby, Graphic India and Archie Comics.
“Blockbuster movies across languages dominated the annual report of BookMyShow, which wrapped up the best of 2022’s entertainment trends across movies, live entertainment and on-demand content through its TVOD platform.
According to the report, films like KGF: Chapter 2, RRR, The Kashmir Files, Ponniyin Selvan: Part 1, Brahmastra: Part One: Shiva, Vikram and Doctor Strange: In The Multiverse of Madness were amongst the most popular movies. KGF: Chapter 2, headlined by Yash, delivered the “mightiest contribution” on BookMyShow where 2.14 million tickets were sold for movies for one single day on April 14 this year– the day the Kannada blockbuster was released.”
“Anil Kapoor is one of those stars who has built his fan base and stardom by being intelligent about keeping a balance between more commercial films and independent films made on a lower budget. This year he maintained that balance by appearing in the commercial hit JugJugg Jeeyo, and the Netflix thriller Thar.
The actor, while speaking during a roundtable recently, gave Bollywood star Ayushmann Khurrana some movie advice in a light vein. As Ayushmann spoke about wanting to do projects that are slightly different from an average Hindi film, Anil stepped in and said that – Everyone is always expecting something different from Ayushmann, and that is when he should stump his fans with a more conventional choice.”
“Actor Anushka Sharma was recently not very happy with athleisure brand Puma India’s social media post. The company’s Instagram handle shared a post featuring multiple images where Anushka can be seen dressed in their clothing.
However, the actor asked Puma India to take down their post since they did not take her permission prior to sharing it on their page. Anushka took to her Instagram story and shared the post. Her fans then took to Puma’s page and bombarded it with comments in support of their favourite star. Meanwhile, Anushka Sharma is set to star in the Jhulan Goswami biopic Chakda Xpress, based on the cricketer’s life. The film will premiere on Netflix, next year.”
Bollywood actors Vicky Kaushal and Kiara Advani graced The Kapil Sharma Show where they promoted their recent movie, Govinda Naam Mera. The duo and Kapil had a blast on the show and in the new video released, Vicky and Kiara were seen cracking up after Kapil delivered his hilarious one-liners. Kapil told Kiara that the makers had borne additional expenses to decorate the set ahead of Christmas and also said that Kiara was looking like ‘Santa’. Kiara, who was sporting a red co-ord set, burst out laughing. Govinda Naam Mera is currently streaming on Disney Plus Hotstar.
Lastly, Ratna Pathak Shah is optimistic that in the current socio-political climate, and at a time the Hindi film industry routinely faces hate, times will change. When asked during a recent event, what it feels like to be an artiste at a time when what one says or the colour of a dress they wear becomes a national topic, Ratna said that they are living in very silly times, if these are the things that are on top of our minds. It isn’t something that she would like to talk about or give much credence to.
