In our top story. Filmmaker Karan Johar’s Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani is having a decent run in theatres during its second week as well. According to industry tracker Sacnilk, the film’s total nett collection in India comes to Rs 113.88 crore. While the film brings relief to its lead actor Ranveer Singh after a string of flops, it continues Alia Bhatt’s winning streak at the box office, establishing her position as a bankable star in the film industry. In 2022, Alia had three theatrical releases, Gangubai Kathiawadi – Rs 129.10 crore, RRR – Rs 274.31 crore, and Brahmastra – Rs 257.44 crore. All 3 films did solid business at the ticket counters.
Meanwhile, Karan Johar recently opened up about the massive trolling that he faced on social media, and how it affected his mother, Hiroo Johar. He also addressed being called the “movie mafia”. In an interview with Sucharita Tyagi, Karan shared – “In the last three years, I felt there was a lot of hate that was coming my way and it had taken a toll on my mom. I saw her crumble under that because she used to watch TV channels. She was also reading stuff online.” About being called “movie mafia,” Karan said, “All I had to be was resilient at that time because I had to be strong for my mom first. They don’t know me.”
Anjali Anand, who played the role of Gayatri Randhawa in Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani, is getting a lot of love for her performance in the film. In a chat with Siddharth Kannan for his YouTube channel, Anjali said that it was more than enough for her when casting director Shanoo Sharma called her and informed her that she was being considered for the role. She shared – “It was enough for me when Shanoo called. On TV, I can do a scene of 15 pages in one take without hesitation. But here, for doing four lines, I have taken 200 takes and I’m not even joking. I was crying because I thought it was not going to happen.”
Moving on. After weeks of speculation, actor Ranveer Singh has finally been announced as the star of the film Don 3. He takes over from Shah Rukh Khan, who played the titular role in the first two instalments, released in 2006 and 2011, respectively. The character was originally played by Amitabh Bachchan in the 1978 hit Don. Excel Entertainment made the announcement, in a video shared online. Don 3 was first planned with SRK returning, but the film never took off despite sustained fan interest over the years. Slated for a 2025 release, Don 3 will be directed by Farhan Akhtar, who also helmed the two SRK movies.
Filmmaker Anil Sharma said that reports of Gadar 2 costing close to Rs 100 crore are vastly exaggerated. He said that the actual figure is much lower, and credited the support he got from the Indian Army because it helped him keep costs in check. In an interview with Lehren Retro, the director also commented on star Sunny Deol‘s fees. He shared – “It was a reasonable budget. We made an effort to control everybody’s fees. Sunny’s fees are what it is. It’s okay, it’s just one person, but even he compromised quite a bit. The Army also supported us so much. They gave us tanks, locations, and soldiers. I’m very thankful to the Army.”
Meanwhile, Vivek Agnihotri, who is a part of the board of Central Board of Film Certification, recently spoke about the many cuts that were given to Akshay Kumar starrer OMG 2. The Kashmir Files director said that this was “not justified” and added that even though he was a part of CBFC, he was “totally against it.” In a chat with india.com, Vivek shared – ” CBFC shouldn’t be pressurised to do anything. It’s only happening because of social and religious pressures. Everybody has understood that CBFC is a vulnerable body. You put pressure on it, and they will make changes. I don’t understand why a film should get so many cuts – 27 cuts. Who are you to decide?”
Actor Sushmita recently sat down with indianexpress.com to speak about her latest project Taali. She shared – ” I knew when I came back to work it would be “you do this role or that part”. And you need the immense capacity to say no. You have to say no keeping aside your misgivings. When I come back, it’s with a sense of responsibility. I want to headline a show and do an author-backed part. It had to be something solid. For that, I will do three months of prep, do workshops, and unlearn. I wanted something like this and I got very lucky.” Taali will stream on JioCinema starting August 15.
Lastly, Actor Kiara Advani paid a quick visit to Amritsar, where she spent some time at the Wagah border to honour soldiers. The Shershaah actor made the trip just ahead of Independence Day.
