Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag gave an interview to Sky Sports in which the 52-year-old talked about potential signings, his players and what to expect ahead of the new campaign.

The Dutchman had a relatively successful pre-season, losing only to Diego Simeone’s Atletico Madrid in Oslo.

Ten Hag’s vision and imprint on the team is already evident, with the players looking reborn and renewed, something that United supporters will be hoping will carry over into the season ahead.

The United boss has shed light on potential signings and the profile of the players he wants to bring in, with the club still in the market for reinforcements in certain areas.

“We know what we want. It’s not about signing players, it’s about signing the right players,” Ten Haag said.

“We are really planning it carefully and working hard to bring in the right players to build a good team, a team that can win games.”

The former Ajax manager refused to be drawn into making comments about Frenkie de Jong, who has been widely mentioned as his main target in the middle of the park.

“I’m not talking about a player who doesn’t have a contract with Manchester United.

The manager, who certainly made an impression at the Theater of Dreams, spoke about disgruntled United striker Cristiano Ronaldo, who he described as a fantastic footballer who has proven himself time and time again.

On whether Ronaldo could fit into his plans, “I think he (Ronaldo) can (fit into the team). It starts with him having to get in shape, he just started.

These fitness comments could point to Anthony Martial starting as the man to lead the line in United’s first leg against Brighton and Hove Albion on Sunday. Martial has been in fine form during the Red Devils’ pre-season tour and appears to have won the manager’s trust.

“You are always judged by what you are now and what you are doing now. The team and Cristiano himself have to prove it,” commented the manager.
