Prabhas, Kriti Sanon and director Om Raut recently released the teaser of their much awaited film Adipurush. However, viewers were really not happy with the portrayal of Hindu deities in this modern visual take on the Ramayan. Apart from the audience, veteran actors Deepika Chihlia, who played Sita in Ramanand Sagar’s Ramayan and Mukesh Khanna, who essayed the role of Bhishma in Mahabharat, strongly disapproved of Adipurush’s teaser.
Expressing her disappointment, Deepika told Aaj Tak that she was not happy with Saif Ali Khan’s portrayal of Ravana compared to veteran actor Arvind Trivedi, who starred as Ravana alongside Deepika in Ramayan. She said that “if the character is from Sri Lanka, they should not look like Mughals.”
“I couldn’t tell much since we only see him for 30 seconds in the teaser, but he really looks different. I agree that times have changed and VFX is an essential part, but only as long as people’s feelings aren’t hurt. (But then) This is just a teaser, maybe it doesn’t live up to the movie. If I try to connect with Arvind Trivedi (Ravan in Ramanand Sagar’s Ramayan), I will not feel good. But I also believe every actor has the freedom to portray a character as their interpretation,” Deepika added.
On the other hand, Mukesh took to Instagram to criticize the makers of Adipurush for their misrepresentation of the iconic mythological characters. “Can Sri Ram wear a leather dress, leather slippers and have a moustache? Can Kanchan Varan Virat Suvesa Hanuman wear leather belt instead of Janeu? Could Lankadish Ravana be Kala Kaluta? Can he keep a beard without a mustache? Can he go for scary dragon ride instead of Pushpak vimana ??? Can he look like Allauddin Khilji ???? If you want to see all this then definitely watch a 500 crore movie – Adipurush !! THE TEESAR is like that so how will the movie be????? Food for thought!!!” he wrote.
Meanwhile, director Om Raut said he was disheartened by the trolling but not surprised because the film was made for a bigger medium, the big screen. “If I had a choice, I would never put it on YouTube, but this is the need of the moment. We have to put it out there so that it reaches a wide audience,” he told The Indian Express.
