Please tell us something about your birthday plans…

Um, I’m not planning anything, but my ex-wife, who is now my best friend, is probably going to take me out for a really expensive meal. I look forward to this. We both love good food. I don’t know if there will be any nice fancy restaurant where it is very difficult to get a reservation. Some place like that she would know. I am looking forward to this wonderful food and wonderful conversation with my best friend.

Did you expect this kind of reaction for Dahaad?

I don’t think about such things. I would like to not think too much about the consequences or the outcome. Although the results are important, when I do it, I don’t think about the results. So I try to keep my focus on what I’m doing in the process and try to concentrate and enjoy the process and try to do the best I can every day.
Because I feel I have no control over the results. I can’t manipulate people into liking me more or less or anything like that. So they should be free to decide what they think of your work and the story you are a part of. And it doesn’t exist to do this story to people. Hundreds and thousands of other people are also needed. So I have very little control. So I figure, why worry about things I can’t control? I can worry and put effort into my work. I do that too. And it usually works best for me because sometimes expectations are also met with disappointment. So I suffer a little less from it. So I didn’t think about expectations. I just thought it was my job. Let me try to do it as best as I can.

What is your strategy for casting unconventional roles?

I just like to do things that really interest me. If you ask me what I want to do next, I don’t know what I want to do next. But when something comes up, I appreciate it. And I’m like, oh, that’s interesting. Maybe I should do this. Or I don’t know if I really care. Maybe that’s the way. So that’s my process. And I also try to constantly surprise myself and also be surprised by the kind of projects that come to me. I don’t have a specific model or anything. I am aware that the only thing I am aware of is that I would like it to be varied. I would like my career to be quite varied and multi-faceted as much as possible. As much as I can bear.

Tell us something about Guns and Gulaabs with Raj & DK…

It’s a crazy series. These two are crazy too. So, they allowed me, they gave me complete freedom to do whatever I wanted. I know they released pictures. I said to myself, please don’t show anything. Let the audience experience it and all that. But there is much more than meets the eye. And it was just fun, I got COVID while filming it, so it wasn’t fun. But everything else was just madness. I hope there’s a season 2. It’s one of the craziest parts I’ve ever done. I was given complete freedom to interpret the role in terms of how to play the scene or the character. But also, you know, what kind of suit, hairstyle, and a lot of other things. There are some appliances I use that I won’t tell you about. But they gave me like, yeah, you do whatever you want.

The series has a very funny and quirky star cast. Any funny anecdotes to share from the set?

Rajkummar Rao is one of the most boring people to work with. He comes, does his job and then leaves. No chat, no nothing. You’d imagine Raj and I would be sitting around talking about craft and this and that. Nothing (laughs)! He just comes, does his job and is gone. I’m like, I don’t know, like, you know, a lot of times I try to start a conversation with him. I feel like he just wants to be left alone. Most of the time I sit and chat with Raj or DK. I talk to them or like some other actors that are there. Some people are curious, they come and ask me. They want to know me better. I am happy to do so. But I thought Raj and I would be like best friends. You’d imagine, wouldn’t you, that two actors who are appreciated for their work, you’d imagine that the two of them would sit down and talk about the craft or, you know, something like that. Nothing! “Kaisa hai tu, haan theek hai”, this is our casual conversation.

Duranga season 2 is coming, every announcement for fans…

Yes Yes Yes. Because it will continue from where it left off and Amit Sadh is also now a part of the show.
And he’s crazy. He’s completely crazy. And he interpreted that part in a very crazy way. And it’s going to be really fun. And it’s an emotional journey for both me and Drashti. So I think there’s a lot that the audience can look forward to. I mean I get messages daily. But sooner, very soon, in the next few months, I think it should come out.

Are you more interested in OTT than movies?

Look, I don’t mind doing both. Because both are long format. And I like to work in long format. So I don’t mind doing both. If I’m interested in it, if I feel like the story is interesting to me, the characters are interesting, I’ll do it. But right now, look, I’m doing both. For example, 8am is a theatrical release. My next project to start shooting, Ulajh, is a theatrical release. This is a feature film. I would like to do both. And, you know, to be completely honest, theaters are hard to succeed because the business model is much harder to succeed. So if you succeed, and because it is difficult, it is also much more satisfying. By drawing the audience into the theaters, you have forced them to watch a film. And that’s why I feel like movie stars are like Paramount. Because it is much more difficult for you to succeed with the premiere in theaters. So I would like to continue to risk my hand there.
