Friends has various continuity mistakes and paradoxes, and among them is one involving Chandler Bing (Matthew Perry) and one of the celebrities in his cheat list, and it’s a very weird one. Over the course of 10 seasons, viewers saw the main characters of Friends go through many ups and downs in all areas of their lives, mostly in their love lives. In the end, all of them (except for Joey) found their “lobsters” and started their own families, but they went through a lot to get to that.
Monica, Chandler, Joey, Phoebe, Rachel, and Ross were very open with each other about all aspects of their lives, such as when they all discussed their list of celebrity “freebies”. Most of the names the group mentioned as part of their lists ended up creating celebrity paradoxes, but one in particular is quite strange. Said paradox is created by Chandler and his list, which includes one odd character that has a very personal connection with him, thus creating confusion but also making a part of his backstory even more strange than it already was.
One Of Chandler’s Celebrity “Freebies” Is Voiced By His Father
In Friends, the group talks about the “freebie” list, which consists of five celebrities they are allowed to sleep with and their partners can’t get mad about it, but Ross being Ross has a hard time choosing his five celebrities. Chandler is the first one who shares his list, which includes Cindy Crawford, Halle Berry, Yasmine Bleeth, and Jessica Rabbit. Rachel is quick to tell him that not only is Jessica Rabbit a cartoon but she’s “way out of his league”, but Chandler doesn’t change his mind about it. Not only would Jessica Rabbit obviously be an impossible “freebie” but she also joins the list of celebrity paradoxes in Friends as Jessica Rabbit is voiced by none other than Kathleen Turner, who played Chandler’s father, Charles Bing/Helena Handbasket.
All six main characters in Friends struggled at some point with their families, but some more than others. Chandler had a lot of trauma from his parents’ divorce when he was a child, which was made worse by the fact that his father, Charles, had an affair with the house boy. Charles left Chandler and his mother, Nora, and some time later became a drag queen, even attending Chandler’s high school swimming events dressed as a different character each time. Kathleen Turner first played Charles a.k.a. Helena Handbasket when Chandler and Monica traveled to Las Vegas to invite him to their wedding, and was last seen at the reception of Monica and Chandler’s wedding.
Other Celebrity Paradoxes In Friends
Jessica Rabbit being part of Chandler’s celebrity “freebies” list is not the only celebrity paradox in Friends. Many actors appeared in Friends after being mentioned in the show or the characters watching some of their work, yet they didn’t recognize them when they met them. Bruce Willis is among Friends’ celebrity paradoxes, as Joey and Chandler are big Die Hard fans, yet when Willis played the father of Ross’ underage girlfriend, they didn’t recognize him. Other examples, and these ones linked to the “freebies” list, are Winona Ryder and Susan Sarandon, who played Rachel’s sorority sister Melissa Warburton and actress Cecilia Monroe, respectively. Surely, none of the celebrity paradoxes in Friends affect the series or the characters’ arcs, but it’s strange and funny how the characters knew these actors exist until they appeared in front of them.
