Celebrity MasterChef spoilers follow.
Celebrity MasterChef‘s latest series continued with its second heat tonight (August 16), with more stars trying to impress Gregg Wallace and John Torode in the kitchen.
This week saw dancer and reality star MoJo, choir leader Gareth Malone, boxing champion Chris Eubank, EastEnders alumni Cliff Parisi and All Saints’ Mel Blatt compete to get through to the next round.
Unfortunately for MoJo, she fell at the first hurdle. But what happened in the episode to lead to her exit?
First of all, the celebs had to show off their skills using a pre-chosen ingredient as their centrepiece. Chris, Cliff, Gareth and MoJo were all praised for their dishes, while Mel’s was singled out as especially good, and Chris even asked if they could save some of Mel’s for him.
After one of the strongest starts in a while, the group were tasked with tasting some poutine, writing down the ingredients they noticed. Quite a few of the celebrities confused the curd cheese for halloumi, while Gareth thought the cayenne pepper was paprika (which is pretty close).
The celebs were then given a bunch of ingredients – some that actually went into the poutine, some that didn’t – and were told to make their own. Cliff and MoJo both went for the wrong meat, using the tough venison rather than the beef. Like Cliff, Chris also incorrectly added redcurrant jelly to his gravy, and way too much at that. “Too much is a great place to start,” he argued, and you wouldn’t argue with Chris Eubank, would you?
Mel once again came out on top, not using wrong ingredient. Gareth was close behind with his attempt. Cliff completely missed the mark but was told his dish “wasn’t a total disaster”, MoJo cooked great chips but needed more gravy, while Chris’ was compared to a Chinese spare rib more than anything else, but it was a very flavourful spare rib.
Finally, the group had to make a dish fit for a dinner party. Cliff went for a squid ink pasta, Gareth made sea bass with duchess potatoes and hollandaise sauce, Mel prepared a cottage pie with truffle, MoJo also made a pasta dish with prawns and garlic bread on the side, while Chris elected to use white rice and corned beef – an ingredient that John and Gregg noted has never been used on MasterChef before.
Mel and Gareth were both praised, while Cliff and MoJo were both critiqued by the judges, with the latter’s uncooked prawns really standing out as an issue. John was mixed on Chris’ gamble, but Gregg was impressed. At the end of it, MoJo’s problems with her timings meant she was the first to leave.
The next two episodes will see two more celebrities from this group go home, while two of them will join Love Island‘s Faye Winter and McFly’s Danny Jones from the first heat in the semi-finals.
Celebrity MasterChef continues on Thursday on BBC One.
