Celebrity Interactions Media Rooms And Other Interesting Things That Happen At Every FDCI X Lakme Fashion Week

Glamorous celebrity photos, effortless runway struts and aesthetically edited behind-the-scenes videos might make FDCI X Lakme Fashion Week look like the hottest event in the country, but the reality is far from what meets the eye. From dedicated media rooms to curated front row seating, here are some things we bet you didn’t know happened at every fashion week in India.

What the fashion week is really like

Opening day is always chaotic

With Anamika Khanna’s AK OK launching the week-long event, the nerves are always high, no matter how many seasons LFW comes back for. Organising teams can be seen rushing around the venue seating guests, making calls and generally holding the fort together. BTW, all invitees need to have proper wrist bands, RSVP cards or media accreditation to even enter the venue, which for Spring Summer 2022 was at the state-of-the-art Jio Convention Centre in Mumbai.

2. There are designated seats for everyone

While there are separate sections made for the guests, a designer’s guest lists and media seating are always pre-planned according to stature. It’s an arrangement that the organising team ( Lakme India, FDCI, Rise Worldwide, Edelman India and Whizcraft for this year) have to take care of. I found the system quite smooth flowing with helpers guiding influencers, celebrities and journalists to their designated spots to watch the show.

3. It’s the ‘it’ spot for trying out all the fashion

Fashion bloggers and established influencers converge at fashion week to test out their latest outfits, trendy accessories, and cool hair and makeup tricks. Everyone has their A-game on, rendering the event a safe space for all kinds of experimentation.

4. Designers dress a number of attendees apart from the models that walk the runway

For Gaurav Gupta’s show, attending guests and influencers were all spotted in the designer’s ensemble creating a whole vibe in the pre-show area. Although most of the outfits are sourced, it does help to create that excitement for the event.

Keeping in line with my influencer attitude, I too, was graciously styled by quirky, one-of -a-kind brands like co-ord sets from  Shop Drawn and Made by Cuin, stylish plunging dresses by The Loom Art, delectable eyewear by Roma Narsinghani and this epic green structured side bag by Tiger Marron. The end result was a fabulous concoction of style, glam photoshoots and a lot of front row access. You gotta dress the part you’re playing, right?

5. Backstage is usually always buzzing

From the Lakme India lounge with the legendary Daniel Bauer taking over hair and make-up to dress rehearsals and choreographers teaching models, all of the magic essentially happens backstage. I had the privilege of sneaking in at the back for a show or two and, it’s safe to say, the energy is infectious.

6. Celebrities and media rooms

A designated media room complete with projector screens, computers and ample seating is always present at all fashion weeks. It’s the epicenter of the storm TBH. Every media personnel, photographer, videographer and managing team member will be found working somewhere in this area.

Apart from the media centre, a conference room for post-show interactions is set up for all designers, celebrities and brand partners. From Ananya Panday and Mrunal Thakur to Sidharth Malhotra, every show stopper is first guided to this area for pre-decided media interactions before they disperse. It is a mandate that even the biggest names have to abide by. All the news you read about fashion week comes from this very room if you really think about it and it’s a cool experience to be a part of.

7. Some of the shows have special venues

For this year’s Lakme Fashion Week in partnership with Fashion Design Council Of India, shows were spread across the main Jio Convention Centre as well as neighbouring venues like the rooftop drive-in at the Jio World Centre. For example, the Satya Paul showcase took place at the open air venue which allowed for a bigger, grander production with cars, cyclists and skateboarders as part of the display. Due to the nature of these events, food and drinks are also a part of the set up.

8. The ending is always bittersweet, despite the exhaustion

Attending fashion week is as tiring as it is glamorous. Not only are you putting your most stylish foot forward, you’re doing it in 6-inch stilettos. After a week of running around for content, scheduling celebrity interactions and arriving in the best outfits your wardrobe has to offer, the finale always brings both happiness that you were a part of India’s fashion history and a relief that your sleep schedule will finally fall back into place!
