Sidney Poitier was a coloured American, who slapped a white American back going against the script. He later told people that blacks would go home from the movies with their pride shattered, most often than not. He changed that for American movies and became the first black actor to win an Oscar. He passed away in 2022 at the age of 94.

The Boston Celtics lost a champion in Bill Russell, and Obama presented him with a Medal of Freedom in 2011. The man stood by Ali, marched with Martin Luther King, and refused to play a game as Celtic blacks were not served at a restaurant. He was 88.

Pele also left us at the age of 82, and he holds the Guinness Book of World Records for the highest number of official goals in the game’s history. He has also won the World Cup thrice.

The poet of baseball Vin Scully also left for the heavens in 2022. He used to announce for the Dodgers, and in 1974, he congratulated Hank Aaron, a black American baseball player, for getting a standing ovation for breaking Babe Ruth’s record.

Virginia McLaurin died at the age of 113. She was a poor lady but lived long enough to dance with Michelle Obama in the White House.

Charles McGee died at the age of 102, the last surviving member of the Tuskegee Airmen.

Queen Elizabeth II, the longest-serving monarch in British history, died after leading the nation for 70 years.

Loretta Lynn, the queen of country music, passed away last year. Meat Loaf died at 74, and his real name Marvin Lee Aday would be close to our hearts for his rock music. Joanna Simon was an opera singer and the sister of pop stars Carly Simon and Lucy Simon.

They both will be missed. Ronnie Spector was the “Be My Baby” singer who died at 78. Michael Lang, best known for the Woodstock concert in 1969, too passed away last year.
