Celebrities step up to the mic for three download-ready shows

More celebrity hosts this week, as thoughts turn to downloading bright and sometimes-breezy podcasts for our summer holidays.

lthough if airport delays, security queues and agonising baggage carousel waits are anything to go by, three may not be enough…

What Do I Know?!
curio.io

Though entirely different genres, Gillian Anderson’s What Do I Know?! has a whiff of Cate Blanchett’s Climate of Change about it, in that it feels less of a vanity project and more a genuine interest in her subject – other people and the world at large.

It’s doubtless empowering for actors to mastermind their own productions rather than serially interpret the vision of directors, and of course their star power already provides a ready-made audience. So why wouldn’t The X Files, The Fall, and Sex Education actress turn her hand to podcast curator?

Every fortnight she “reflects on a series of audio articles”, exploring “the fascinating stories about incredible people, covering social challenges, sexual liberation, phenomenal women and more”, such as the pioneering Italian scientist, Rita Levi-Montalcini, who won the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine in 1986, to gender bias in autism diagnosis to the literal power of poo – as a fully renewable, natural energy resource – with science writer Lina Zeldovich.

Released fortnightly on the subscription-based journalism app Curio.

Brydon &

Welsh comedian and actor Rob Brydon is a familiar fixture on British telly, whether spoofing with Steve Coogan on The Trip or hosting the panel show Would I Lie to You? But that’s not to say familiarity breeds contempt.

The seemingly effortless repartee on Brydon & has the usual pick and mix of light-entertainment names – Bob Mortimer, the aforementioned Coogan, Dawn French, David Mitchell, Lee Mack – of Irish interest are Kenneth Branagh and Ed Byrne. It’s a mostly white-English-funnyman affair, although recent appearances by Mo Gilligan and Reggie Watts suggest a wider remit beckons.

Video of the Day

Standout episodes include the eternally delightful Richard E Grant, while Succession and Stranger Things fans will get a kick out of Matthew Macfadyen and, most recently, David Harbour.

I Weigh
Apple, Spotify

The Good Place actress and activist Jameela Jamil continues to provoke her haters with I Weigh, which began in 2020 as an inclusive social media community before being developed into a podcast.

Here, Jamil discusses hot-button topics (dieting, trans debates, big pharma) with fellow activists and “names”: Aisling Bea, Evan Rachel Wood, Esther Perel, Tig Notaro, Katherine Ryan.
