The upcoming fifth season of Netflix’s hit The Crown will see another cast change as Imelda Staunton, Jonathan Pryce and Dominic West take on the roles of Queen Elizabeth II, Prince Philip and Charles respectively.
As it turns out, West had to consider taking the role given his personal relationship with Charles, whom he’s met on numerous occasions – and he also shared a cheeky comment Charles’ wife Camilla, now Queen Consort, made to him after he was cast.
West said this week Radio Times Magazine that when he saw Camilla at a party in 2021, she cheekily called him “Your Majesty”, indicating her approval or acceptance of the casting.
West also revealed in that interview that once he decided to take on the role, he offered to resign as an ambassador for the Prince’s Trust in case it was perceived as a conflict of interest given Charles’ role with the charity.
West revealed that the resignation was denied in a letter from Charles’ personal secretary, and that the letter essentially said, “You do what you want, you’re an actor. It has nothing to do with us.”
West explained, “I think it probably is [Charles] attitude towards him. I’ve been in line a few times to shake his hand and it’s adorable. Obviously, it’s very helpful to meet the character you’re playing.”
Ahead of the show’s fifth season, which will be the first to air since the death of Queen Elizabeth II earlier this year, and with season 6 currently in production, show creator Peter Morgan spoke of the “complicated feelings” he had when he heard for her Majesty’s death while filming the drama.
