Buckingham Palace lawyers ‘asked Good Morning America to see Prince Harry’s full interview’

Buckingham Palace’s lawyers asked ABC’s Good Morning America and CBS’s 60 Minutes to see Prince Harry’s full interviews before commenting on his claims – but both programs refused.

The Duke of Sussex revealed more personal details about his life in GMA’s interview with former NFL player Michael Strahan, which aired today in the US around noon UK time, following Sunday’s 60 Minutes interview.

In a statement, GMA said it received a message from a law firm representing the palace “while we were on the air” asking producers to provide “a copy of the entire interview.”

But the manufacturers refused to agree to the request because they “don’t do that as an organization” as a “matter of policy”.

GMA said in a statement: “We received a response from the law firm representing Buckingham Palace this morning while we were on air, saying the Palace needed to ‘consider exactly what was said in the interview, in the context in which it appeared,’ and asked to provide them immediately with a copy of the entire interview, which we do not do as a news organization as a matter of our policy.”

Meanwhile, 60 Minutes host Anderson Cooper said at the end of his interview with Harry that the show had “reached out to Buckingham Palace for comment”.

“His representatives requested, before we consider a response, that 60 Minutes provide them with our report before we air it tonight, which we never do,” he added.

It is standard practice among reputable journalists to decline to share reports with subjects prior to publication, although their content is often summarized when comment is sought.

The GMA interview heard an excerpt from Spare in which the Duke of Sussex claimed that Camilla “sacrificed me on her personal PR altar.”

Harry attacked what he claimed were the Queen Consort’s attempts to “rehabilitate” her image after being cast as the “third party” in her parents’ marriage, but also said he sympathized with her and she was not “evil stepmother’.

The publication of Spare, due out on Tuesday, has been delayed since the Queen’s death, but the Duke insisted his grandmother was not angry or upset with him for wanting to step down as a senior royal official.

Strahan read an extract from Harry’s book criticizing the Queen Consort: “In a funny way I even wanted Camilla to be happy. Maybe she would be less dangerous if she was happy.

Another excerpt reads: “I have mixed feelings about acquiring a step-parent who I thought had recently sacrificed me on her personal PR altar.”

Asked what Camilla had ‘done’ in that moment, Harry replied: ‘I feel a huge amount of compassion for her, you know. Because she was the third person in my parents’ marriage and she had a reputation or image to restore.

“Whatever conversations happened, whatever deals or trades were made in the beginning, she was led to believe that this would be the best way to do it.”

In his earlier interview with Anderson Cooper, Harry said Camilla’s desire to build a relationship with the British press made her “dangerous” and there would be “bodies left on the street because of it.”
