‘Breakfast Club’ kicks off November schedule of movies at Wildey Theatre in Edwardsville

The eighties are back, at least for the Wildey Theatre’s November selection of $3 Tuesday movies.

Three of the four films already announced for November were released in the 1980s. The movie schedule for the month kicks off on Nov. 1 with the 1985 classic “The Breakfast Club.”

The coming-of-age comedy-drama was written, produced and directed by John Hughes. The film starts Emilio Estevez, Paul Gleason, Anthony Michael Hall, Jeff Nelson, Molly Ringwald and Ally Sheedy. It tells the story of five teenagers from different high school cliques who serve a Saturday detention overseen by their authoritarian vice principal.

In 2016, “The Breakfast Club” was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.”

“It was shown at the Wildey when it first came out and it’s directed by John Hughes, who has done so many great movies,” Wildey manager Al Canal said. “A lot of great actors got their start in that film.

“I invite people to come back and relive their high school days or to see the movie for the first time if they haven’t seen it. A lot of the topics in this movie are still relevant today.”

The movie for Tuesday, Oct. 8 hasn’t been determined, but Canal expects it will be announced soon.

On Oct. 15, the Wildey will show “Bullitt,” the 1968 action thriller starring Steve McQueen, Robert Vaughn and Jacqueline Bisset.

Like “The Breakfast Club,” in 2007, “Bullitt” was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as being “culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant.”

“There are a lot of classic car collectors in the Edwardsville area, and I received a request for this movie,” Canal said. “Mustangs play a big role in ‘Bullitt’ and I invite anyone who owns a Mustang to bring it by. We hope to have one or two classic Mustangs parked in front of the theatre.

“We haven’t shown this movie at the Wildey for quite a few years, so we’re glad to have it back.”

The next movie, on Nov. 22, will be on the Tuesday before Thanksgiving, which means it’s the perfect time for the Wildey to show “Planes, Trains and Automobiles,” the 1987 comedy starring Steve Martin and John Candy.

The film is also written, produced and directed by John Hughes.

“The movie is about Steve Martin’s and John Candy’s characters trying to get home for Thanksgiving,” Canal said of “Planes, Trains and Automobiles,” which is marking its 35th anniversary. “It’s another John Hughes movie, but I didn’t think about until now.

“I hate to say it but based on the way things are going with travel this year, such as all the flight cancellations, there’s a good chance that people might be having their own real-life adventures with planes, trains and automobiles.”

The final movie of the month, on Nov. 29, is “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation,” the 1989 comedy starring Chevy Chase, Beverly D’Angelo and Randy Quaid. The film was directed by Jeremiah S. Chechik and written and co-produced by Hughes.

The film, which tells the story of the Griswold family spending Christmas vacation at home with their relatives and the ensuing mayhem, was the second of five sequels to the original “National Lampoon’s Vacation” in 1983. The second movie, “National Lampoon’s European Vacation,” was released in 1985.

“Thanksgiving is over and we’re getting into the Christmas season,” Canal said. “I think it’s one of the few movies where a sequel was as good as the original.”

While the Wildey will not be having a movie or a concert for Veterans Day on Friday, Nov. 11, the theatre’s lobby and bathrooms will be open during the annual downtown Veterans Day Parade.

“Bring your kids to watch the parade, but if they need to use the facilities or if it’s a little chilly, you can come into the Wildey to warm up,” Canal said. “That’s an important day for me because before the parade, myself and a couple other people walk up and down the parade route and we hand out American flags for people to wave.”
