To date, many great directors have contributed to the canon of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but few have earned the recognition on the level of Ryan Coogler. in 2018 black Panther not only earned rave reviews, but became the first MCU title to be nominated for Best Picture at the Academy Awards. With Coogler’s latest Marvel film, Black Panther: Wakanda Foreverwhich is set to hit theaters in just a few days, many fans are hoping that the director will stick with the franchise for a long time and maybe even take the helm of an upcoming The Avengers blockbuster – but he’s not ready to commit to anything until his latest work is out.
I sat down with Ryan Coogler this past weekend during a press day in Los Angeles Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, and while we covered a lot of topics (stay tuned for more stories here on CinemaBlend!), our conversation ended with a conversation about the future. I asked if I was going to direct next The Avengers project was something he was interested in, and he explained that his personal multitasking skills prevented him from saying anything engaging:
That’s a great question. How I work, you know, as a personal and hopefully no offense: I can, as a writer and director, I can only like to do what’s in front of me, you know what I’m saying? I’m really bad at multitasking when it comes down to it, you know? I’ve never been good at multitasking. Usually if I’m trying to think of something else while I’m doing something, what I’m doing suffers, you know? So I like to stay focused on that, get this movie out into the world, and then I’ll start thinking about what I want to do next, if there’s something soon, you know? There was a lot in this one.
“A lot went into it” is clearly an understatement, and so his opinion is highly valued. Ryan Coogler’s deal with Marvel Black Panther: Wakanda Forever it dates back to October 2018, meaning he is nearing the end of his four-year journey with the project. Making the film is not only a huge undertaking in itself (especially multi-million dollar blockbusters), but it’s also a job done with a lot of emotional energy following Chadwick Boseman’s death in August 2020. The writer/director clearly put his all into the making of the 2022 film, and understandably that means hyper-focusing on the task at hand and not thinking about ‘what’s next’.
What will happen after November 11 when Black Panther: Wakanda Forever box office hits? We’ll have to wait and see. The next one The Avengers movie, 2025 The Avengers: The Kahn Dynastyis already set to be done by Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten RingsDestin Daniel Cretton but 2026 Avengers: Secret Wars remains a project without a director.
