Interviews conducted in recent years are said to delve into sensitive topics such as preferences for pornography, extramarital affairs and having nude photos on their phones.
It remains unclear whether male applicants were subjected to such interrogations, as none of the male applicants interviewed by The Journal mentioned such experiences. Spokesperson for Gates VenturesBill Gates’ personal office, said it was not aware of these types of questions being asked during background checks performed by a third-party contractor Concentric advisors.
She also mentioned that the company follows industry standards during pre-employment screenings for both men and women, and salespeople are required to comply with state and federal laws.
CEO of Concentric, Mike LeFevre, supported the spokeswoman’s statement, confirming that the company provides industry-standard checks that are consistent regardless of gender. Applicants for jobs in Gates’ private office, however, claimed they were asked personal questions and told their job offers depended on passing an assessment that included these sensitive inquiries.
The Wall Street Journal exposes wrongful practices
Documents reviewed by The Journal allegedly contradicted Concentric’s claims, indicating that the vetting process was not just for hiring purposes. The consent form discloses that a behavioral assessment conducted by Concentric will assess applicants’ suitability for employment at Gates Ventures by covering areas such as drug and alcohol use, medical history and psychiatric history related to the job. The form gives permission to disclose the results, including “highly sensitive information,” to Gates Ventures employees.
Karol Myaskovlegal adviser to the federal Equal Employment Opportunity Commissionnoted that asking about a job applicant’s health or psychiatric history during the hiring process violates the federal Americans with Disabilities Act.
It is important to note that Gates came under scrutiny in 2019 when he was accused of having an affair with a Microsoft employee. The employee reportedly wrote a letter to the board disclosing the sexual relationship. Gates and his ex-wife Melinda divorced in 2021, but continue to collaborate on charitable initiatives through Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
It recently became clear that Jeffrey Epstein, a convicted pedophile, allegedly threatened to reveal another affair Gates had with a Russian bridge player after Gates refused to participate in Epstein’s philanthropic project. Gates’ spokespeople say the relationship with the Microsoft employee was consensual and occurred two decades ago, while the extortion attempts against Epstein are related to Gates’ relationship with Mila Antonovathe card player.
