Ben Affleck has a Wordle group chat with long-time friend Matt Damon as well as other major celebrities. Since its first Wordle puzzle was played in June 2021, the online game has had millions of users seek to guess the five-letter mystery word daily. Now owned by the New York Times, Wordle has inspired several spinoff games feature more word opportunities, including Dordle (two words), Quordle (four words), Octordle (eight words), and even the behemoth Duotrigordle (thirty-two words).
While promoting his Nike drama movie Air, Affleck revealed to The Hollywood Reporter his intense word-game routines, which feature an A-list celebrity Wordle group chat. Among the participants are Damon, Jason Bateman, and Bradley Cooper, the former two of whom also star in Air, adding up to a competition that involves “a lot of mockery and derision.” Check out the full quote from Affleck below:
Octordle. It’s just Wordle with more words. Don’t be impressed, it’s not harder. I was invited to join a cool little red velvet rope celebrity Wordle group. Matt [Damon]’s one of them. Jason Bateman and Bradley [Cooper], and … Actually, the first rule of Wordle is don’t talk about Wordle. Unless you get it in three guesses. I used to do the crossword compulsively in the mornings and think I was good at word games. And let’s face it, going up against actors, it’s not a high bar. I expected to do fairly well, so I was seriously humbled. You have to do the Wordle, the Quordle and the Octordle, and add up your score, and then whoever gets the lowest score wins for the day. It’s fiercely competitive, and there’s a lot of mockery and derision. So I’m in training.
Ben Affleck & Matt Damon’s Long-Standing Friendship
Bateman and Cooper may be unexpected members of the “red velvet rope” exclusive chat, though Damon and Affleck’s word game banter is no surprise. Affleck and Damon have famously been friends for over 40 years, growing up in Cambridge, Massachusetts, they were childhood friends, meeting when Damon was 10 years old and Affleck was eight.
Affleck and Damon’s friendship turned into collaboration when they co-wrote the screenplay for Good Will Hunting, in which they also both starred and would go on to win Best Original Screenplay for their efforts. This marked a major launching point for their career, and the childhood friends both became major Hollywood stars in just a few years.
Most recently, Affleck and Damon both acted alongside each other and co-wrote the script for Ridley Scott’s historical drama The Last Duel which, though scoring largely positive reviews, infamously flopped at the box office. Soon, the two friends will hit the screen together again in Air, which Affleck also directs. Collaborators as they may be, Affleck and Damon still have their competitive fun after all these years, as seen with their intense word game battles.
