The final installment of the 2023 Oscars season kicked off with voters voting on the winners of the 95th annual Academy Awards. Throughout the season, Gold Derby interviewed dozens of nominees, including all five Best Actor contenders. Follow the links below to watch each of these 20-minute interviews.
Austin Butler“elvis”
Butler took on the coveted task of portraying one of history’s greatest musical icons in the lead role of Baz Luhrmannbiopic of. He describes his transformation process in the legend, sharing, “Part of it is just getting your body to be able to move a certain way. And then he doesn’t do any of that choreography. It can never feel like choreography.” He formed an immediate emotional connection with the late musician when he learned that Elvis’ mother had died when he was just 23 because: ‘That’s the same age I was, when my mother was dying.’
Colin Farrell“Banshee of Inisherin”
In The Banshees of Inisherin, Farrell plays Padraic, a resident of the fictional island of Inisherin, who undergoes a personal transformation when jaded folk musician Colm (Brendan Gleeson) abruptly ends their long friendship. The actor believes that his character appealed to the audience because: “You want to be liked. You want to feel like you’re included, and one thing that many of us fear in our experience as human beings is being excluded from any kind of community experience, you know, being told that you don’t belong, that you don’t are wanted.’
Brendan Fraser“The Whale”
In The Whale, Fraser portrays Charlie, a morbidly obese man in his final days as he tries to reconnect with his estranged daughter (Sadie Sink). The actor notes about the role: “It gave me a sense of moral obligation. I wanted to play Charlie with the dignity he deserves. He is not the physical manifestation of how he presents himself in his corporeal being. He is a man with his conflicts, his darker shades, his mistakes, his hopes, his desires, it’s all there.
Paul Mezcal“After the Sun”
Mezcal stars in Aftersun as Callum, a troubled young father on what will become a fateful road trip with his 11-year-old daughter Sophie (Frankie Leather). The role is based on a director Charlotte Wells‘ own childhood memories, an aspect of the role the actor didn’t take too seriously in his preparation, revealing: “I think the process of kind of sniffing out the background and kind of questioning the behavior is pretty much the same, or so close to […] You’ll never get enough if you have enough information, which I think is actually the strength of the film.”
Bill Nighy“Alive”
Life is set in 1950s London and stars Nighy as Mr. Williams, a hard-nosed bureaucrat facing the final months of his life after being suddenly diagnosed with a terminal illness. His devastating news inspires him to leave London and start living for the moment. The veteran describes the role of the downtrodden man as challenging to play because “The way I do it is quite physical because you have to be still and tight, you have to rip your voice out and you’re always tense. It’s quite exhausting!”
