After Fast healing clip, this is your second talk show. Where did you get so much enthusiasm and courage?

We have to deal with certain challenges, we have to be around and we have to be with the times. People need to see you as there is a lot of competition. Not that it bothers me, but I have to watch how I progress in life. Things are moving slowly but in a direction. With the kind of response I’m getting for the show, I’m too tempted to do the next season.

How did you come up with the idea to include artists from the past in your show?

The idea to take them all came from looking at my father (Salim Khan). He has done so much in life and continues to tell us so much and we continue to soak up as much as we can, but I thought it should be documented. It needed to be archived and future generations in our family would know where our history came from. I didn’t want to have a casual conversation at a dinner party, but shoot it professionally in a studio with a four-camera setup.

Continue…

I thought why dwell on it? There are so many other people around me. There are so many people who have done great work like Dev (Anand) Sahab and Raj Kapoor. Many singers and directors have passed away, we only know them through a song or a movie and a few interviews here and there. If this show can inspire people to respect these legends, I will feel happy. I can’t document them all though. Aunt Helen was not very easy to get into the show.

How was the whole experience with your stepmother Helen?

When I approached her she immediately said no. She did not want to talk about her personal life. She felt who would be interested in her life. Then I asked her to wait and see Dad’s interview. It was like a pilot to get her approval. I wanted to keep it very candid. I even said that if you don’t like it after you shoot it, I’ll scrap it. I was willing to bear all the costs involved.

Have you reinvented yourself now that you’re a talk show host?

I feel like the conversationalist that I am, it comes by default and very naturally to me. People might have thought I was quite amiable and natural as a host. My film image was very different as people couldn’t see my personal side while I was playing characters. How Salman Khan bounced back with So Ka Dum and Mr. Amitabh Bachchan s Kaun Banega Crorepati, even their film careers have been revived after these reality TV shows. It’s just about behavior. Shah Rukh Khan couldn’t do it.

Why are you saying that about Shah Rukh Khan?

I think he failed to bring likability and naturalism to the small screen. People must have found it fake. There were two people. After all, you can’t be fake in front of TV or you have to be very smart like Amitabh Bachchan. He knows his audience but Shah Rukh Khan couldn’t.
