Director Anurag Kashyap is back doing what he does best, which is making his kind of cinema. His upcoming directorial Dobaaraa, in which he reunites with Taapsee Pannu, will soon open the Melbourne Indian Film Festival 2022. At the trailer launch of Dobaaraa, Anurag spoke about why Hindi films fail at the box office one after the other, while some South films were a huge success.
Citing one of the reasons behind the struggling Hindi film industry, Anurag said that Hindi films nowadays have not taken root as filmmakers try to impress by venturing outside their genre which does not resonate with the larger audience.
He added that Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam films are rooted in their culture when you watch them, whether it is mainstream culture or not. But this is not the case with Hindi films. He said that the Hindi film industry now has directors who cannot even speak Hindi and it reflects in their films. “People who speak English make Hindi films,” he said.
However, Anurag is sure that when mainstream filmmakers make their kind of films, they will surely work. He cited the example of Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Gangubai Kathiawadi and Anees Bazmee’s Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2, which were the only two films to become hits after the pandemic. “Other directors are trying to make these films that they wouldn’t normally make, they’re trying to impress by changing genres. The moment we get a foothold, our films will work,” he added.
Dobaaraa will be the first evening film of IFFM 2022 for which Anurag Kashyap and Taapsee Pannu will travel to Melbourne. The film, a Hindi remake of the 2018 Spanish film Mirage, follows the story of a woman (played by Taapsee). It shows how her character is given the opportunity to save the life of a 12-year-old boy who witnessed a death during a thunderstorm that occurred 25 years ago by connecting through a television during a similar storm in the present.
