Anurag Kashyap praises the makers of Sunny Deol, Ameesha Patel in the lead role; calls it “responsible mainstream filmmaking”

Gadar 2 is one of the biggest successes for Bollywood ever. After Pathaan, Gadar 2 became the Hindi film to gross over Rs 400 crore at the domestic box office. It is now close to the Rs 500 crore mark. This is huge considering the budget of the film was only Rs 120 crore. In fact, director Anil Sharma said that Sunny Deol took a pay cut for the film. Now the producers are planning to give him a hefty amount from the profit. While many critics said the film’s anti-Pakistan sentiments were overt and lacked subtlety, the masses applauded it. Anurag Kashyap decodes the success of Ghadaar 2

Anurag Kashyap told Bollywood Hungama that he is yet to watch the Sunny Deol patriotic actioner. But he can understand why he’s so smitten. He said that the marketing of Gadar 2 has tapped well into the nostalgia of the 2001 hit. In fact, Gadar clashed with Lagaan and Dil Chahta Hai. The film made more money than two of them. We could see Sunny Deol and Ameesha Patel promoting the film as Tara Singh and Sakina. The songs also retained the charm of the old film. Anurag Kashyap said he watched Ghoomer only in Melbourne. He was quoted as saying to Bollywood Hungama, “I think great marketing has been done and also Ghadar has a lot of nostalgia. I think people forget that. Gadhar came with Lagaan and Dil Chahta Hai.”He said that Gadhar made twice the total of Aamir Khan’s two acts. He said that the marketing of the film is so good. He said, “I mean the marketing has recreated the Gadar nostalgia. Anurag Kashyap said he was happy to see how the makers of Gadar 2 and OMG 2 made hits without hurting the sentiments of any community. He said they did not use the films as a means of creating discord between groups of people. He said some manufacturers are using the films as opportunities to increase polarization. He was quoted as saying to Bollywood Hungama, “It was responsible mainstream filmmaking. It did not create any chaos or unnecessary animosity or hatred.’
