Anthony Starr, who plays Homelander on The Boys, discusses the show’s unique approach to getting celebrity guest stars to appear on the series.

The Boys’ Anthony Starr explained how the show goes about getting its celebrity cameos.
In an interview with CinePOP, Starr — alongside co-stars Jensen Ackles, Claudia Doumit and Nathan Mitchell — was asked who they would like to see in The Boys‘ fourth season. “The answer is almost infinite,” Starr said. “So many great people out there. I’m going to channel [showrunner Eric Kripke] for a moment and say ‘Whoever answers the phone to [executive producer] Seth Rogen.’ Because I think that’s literally how we get famous people to do this shit. Seth calls up his buddies and goes ‘You wanna be on the show?’ And luckily he knows cool enough people and he’s a good enough dude and he’s got good enough friendships that people are like ‘Yeah, we’ll do it.'”
Season 3 of The Boys continued the series’ trend of inviting celebrities to parody and skewer the entertainment industry, starting with the premiere episode when Charlize Theron cameoed as Stormfront in the film-within-a-show Dawn of the Seven. Some of the most notable appearances came in “Herogasm,” when the Deep led a chorus of stars singing “Imagine” by John Lennon in a parody of Gal Gadot doing the same thing in March 2020. Kripke explained the thought process behind the sequence, saying “I like the Wonder Woman movies and I understand and respect that [Gadot] approached that with good intentions. But, and I think she admits it now too, but it was like really tone-deaf and the notion that like everyone is terrified and literally locked away but the sort of out-of-tune song from a bunch of celebrities is what you all need to be happy again. It was ultimately, a hit on the bubble of celebrity.”
Rogen himself appeared in the episode “The Last Time to Look on This World of Lies” as a supe porn patron watching a livestream of Crimson Countess, played by Laurie Holden. “I thought [the scene] was super funny. A lot of that scene was improvised,” Holden explained in an interview. “This is the beauty of The Boys — they support you and they’re so kind and collaborative that you can creatively fly. A lot of what I did in there was just inspiration in the moment that ended up being completely whacked out.”
Amazon Studios has already renewed The Boys for a fourth season and is currently developing The Boys Presents: Varsity, a spinoff that will follow prospective heroes at the Godolkin University School for Crimefighting, an academy for training the next generation of Vought-backed supes. Kripke confirmed that plot threads and characters from The Boys will appear on Varsity, saying, “There’s definitely crossover, and we’re doing our best to design a universe that sees some of the issues and storylines in Season 3 hand off to the first season in Varsity. Like there’s a presidential campaign happening in the background of that season, and there’s certain things that are happening at that school that are both in reaction to Season 3 of The Boys.”
