Anthony Albanese has won one of the top gongs at the GQ Man of the Year Awards as he took some time out of politics to go on a date night with his girlfriend.

The Prime Minister and partner Jodie Haydon, 43, glammed up for the event at Crown Sydney on Wednesday, which was held in person for the first time since the pandemic.

The Labor leader appeared dapper in a black tuxedo with a matching bow tie, while Ms Haydon opted against a gown and also donned a black suit.

Mr Albanese and his girlfriend posed for photos on the red carpet along with other local celebrities, which included Russell Crowe, Ian Thorpe, Vance Joy and Dylan Alcott.

Speaking to the media ahead of the show, he described the event as “good fun” and “caps off what has been a pretty extraordinary year”.

“It is good that GQ celebrates what is about good men’s health and issues facing men,” he said.

“We need to talk about things as well, not just physical health but mental health and GQ plays an important role in that.”

Mr Albanese won Politician of the Year, with Crowe taking out Global Icon, Murray Bartlett was awarded the top gong of GQ Man of the Year, football star Josh Cavallo won Sportsman of the Year and Sporting Icon went to Dylan Alcott.

The Prime Minister later took to social media after the event to share a loved-up photo alongside Ms Haydon from the red carpet.

His attendance comes after a whirlwind last couple of weeks, which included a tour to Asia where he met several world leaders, such as Chinese President Xi Jinping, and laid out Australia’s interests while building on relationships with other nations.

Mr Albanese then returned from his international trip and immediately travelled to the New South Wales central west this week where he met flood-affected locals.

He was confronted by one Eugowra resident on Tuesday who questioned where he had been while they were fighting for their lives and then later mopping up the mess.

“Where have you been the last week?” plasterer Anthony Robinson asked.

“Overseas, I heard … Your people need you here.”

Mr Albanese, who appeared stunned and lost for words briefly, said he was representing Australia overseas and came home as soon as he could.

“I’ve come straight away. I’m here. I’ve been in touch with (NSW Premier Dom (Perrottet), we’ve have had the Deputy Prime Minister, the ADF was here first day,” he said.

It’s set to be another busy couple of weeks for the Prime Minister who will meet Finnish leader Sanna Marin on Friday and hopes to rush through the industrial relations bill in the final sitting fortnight of parliament before the Christmas break.
