Director Anand L Rai has shared his reaction to people calling Akshay Kumar starrer Raksha Bandhan a regressive film because of its content and plot. Viewers found the film problematic regarding several words used to describe the women, her sole purpose in life being to get married and highlighting India’s dowry system.
Talking about people’s reaction to Raksha Bandhan, Anand L Rai told News18, “You can’t ignore it. I know we should be very progressive, we are in many ways. But there are a lot of things to take care of and you can’t close your eyes. Not talking about it won’t give you a solution. As a producer, I can’t write articles, I can’t make documentaries. My only way to express myself is through movies. So if you think there’s something regressive about it, that means there’s time to fix our society.”
He further added, “I could say we are the best in the world, but are we? We do our best. This thing of us (the actors and the director) coming together and telling you a story like Raksha Bandhan where you feel there is something regressive, it means our intention was just to put the focus there. Let’s not ignore it, let’s deal with it. So the next time I make a film, you won’t find that kind of regression.”
The director had earlier shared that he always wanted to tell stories from the heartland of India and make them part of the cinematic landscape. In Raksha Bandhan, Akshay plays the brother and man of the house who has the responsibility of marrying three of his sisters. It also stars Bhumi Pednekar, Seema Pahwa, Sadia Khateeb, Deepika Khanna, Smrithi Srikanth and Sahejmeen Kaur in prominent roles.
