Amelia Diemoldenberg talks about her life-changing encounters

The Creator Award goes to Amelia Diemoldenberg, CEO of the wildly popular YouTube series Chicken Shop Date and queen of all-around content creation. Here, Amelia shares her life-changing dates – from personal to professional – and who her favorite Chicken Shop date has been so far (no, it’s not Aitch)…


The morning I got to talk to comedian and broadcaster Amelia Diemoldenberg via Zoom was, frankly, a disaster. My WiFi is spotty, my old laptop lags, and just as I’m about to call into our 9 a.m. conversation, a man in a high-vis jacket turns on the noisiest leaf blower known to man, just feet from my window. I don’t usually get nervous interviewing celebrities, but right now I’m a little nervous.

I shouldn’t have been. Amelia is immediately warm and friendly, admitting her camera is off because she’s “still in her pyjamas” and laughing out loud when I apologize for the noise of the leaf blower outside. “That’s so weird,” she says, “I was just about to tell you the exact same thing, there’s one outside my window too. Are we neighbors?!”

She’s noticeably livelier than her signature “awkward” interview style on her cult YouTube series, Chicken Shop Datewhich has garnered almost 200 million views since its inception in 2014 and has earned Amelia a loyal fanbase of 4 million people worldwide.

The format sees Amelia Diemoldenberg attend a first date with celebrities including Ed Sheeran, Daniel Kaluuya and Louis Theroux at various UK chicken shops, featuring Amelia’s fearless execution, long pauses and unpredictable questions (“Have you ever had an STI ?”; “How many dates until you show a girl your hairline?”).

It’s a first of its kind format and the countless laughs it’s brought us see Amelia honored with GLAMOUR’s Woman of the Year Creator Award. In honor of the holiday, Amelia shares with GLAMOR the most significant dates in her life so far…

2010-2012: Accession The incision magazine and launching Chicken Shop Date

The incision (not on New York Magazine‘s style and culture section) was a pop culture publication that came out of a youth club in north-west London, near where I’m from. I was 16 and everyone at my school knew I wanted to work in magazines – specifically my dream was to be the editor of Vogue.

So my IT teacher urged me to join and I started going every Wednesday after school and it was a really creative, open space where you could write about anything that interested you. I knew I wanted to interview musicians in an environment where I would normally never go to a meeting, so finally, after about a year, I finally got up the courage to present Chicken Shop Date. It ran as a column in that magazine for a year and a half. I don’t see how I would create Chicken Shop Date today without this column.

March 2014: Filming of the first Chicken Shop Date with Gets

I studied at Central St Martin’s between 2012 and 2017 and after my first year at the Art Foundation (where I realized I should never be allowed to draw or paint anything) I decided to Chicken Shop Date YouTube series.
