Two movies filmed in Africa will be shown at the SALA Event Center (former Reel Deal) on Monday, March 20, to help raise funds needed ($5000) for the cost of shipping 8 school libraries to Malawi later this month. Tickets ($10) for the movies can be purchased in advance online here: https://sala-los-alamos-event-center.square.site/s/shop . Tickets can also be purchased at the door.
Schedule for the evening is as follows:
4:00-4:30 Doors open. Snacks, drinks, African items available for purchase in the lobby.
4:30-6:10 Movie Duma will be shown. (100 minutes)
6:00-6:45 Snacks, drinks, African items available for purchase in the lobby.
6:30-8:15 Movie The First Grader will be shown (105 minutes)
The movie DUMA will be shown at 4:30 on Monday, March 20 at SALA. For Xan, life is about his father, their farm in South Africa, and their rescued cheetah, Duma. Xan knows he’ll have to return Duma to the wild but Xan’s life changes drastically when his father dies and he and his mother must leave the farm and move to the city. Xan is bullied at school, Duma escapes the apartment, and suddenly the pair is on the lam. Xan uses the opportunity to return Duma to the wild and here begins a Herculean journey, where a young boy must face life-or-death situations. Xan befriends a backpacker, Ripkuna and the three trek through the desert, face sandstorms, crocodiles, wild boars, lions, and attacking insects.
Duma is an enchanting coming-of-age drama that teaches viewers the power and importance of family. Plenty of action, beautiful landscapes, and lots of animals! This movie is rated PG for mild, adventure peril and can be enjoyed by all ages! Please see a complete synopsis here:

The movie THE FIRST GRADER will be shown at 6:30 p.m. on Monday, March 20 at SALA.
Set in a mountain village in Kenya, The First Grader tells the true story of 84-year old Maruge, a Mau Mau freedom fighter, who survived imprisonment during British colonialism and now seeks to benefit from a nationwide declaration that an education is the right of all by joining a classroom of first graders so he can learn to read and write. Facing fierce opposition from parents and officials who don’t want to waste precious school space on such an old man, the headteacher supports his struggle to gain admission.
